I, too , prefer the lighter one. Besides, "Mango Tango" is a cooler name.

Yeah... I/We're about 99% sure to pull the trigger on "Mango Tango". One more hem&haw session, but I think that'll be the color.

Jeff sent another progress pic... the primer/surfacer sanding is done, and to quote "smooth as a baby's butt". Next step is sealer, then PAINT!!

"What color scoop?"

The scoop will be mostly pearl white, as it sits entirely within the confines of the main two stripes. There will be a strip of Mango down the center.

(I also am having Jeff mount the scoop using polished SS button-head Allens, instead of riveting the scoop in place. I'm imagineering an idea of ducting the scoop air into the heater box, and with the machine screws poking through I can mount things to the underside of the hood.)

Talked to Jeff today, and committed to "Mango Tango" & his favorite Pearl White (Stripes).

He sent a few more progress pics. Like I said earlier, any good body & paint guy/shop could do one of these cars... but are they going to have dedicated jigs/bucks & fixtures just for FFR Roadsters?

(His reputation and quality is why I chose to go with him to "do" my car.)

Factory Five Mk4 Roadster Build - 40 Watt Garage - Stripe Layout
Permalink

Jeff's been going great-guns on this the last few days. My understanding is that there is a time window that has to be met between processes, so the different materials will "chemically" bond as well as physically.

This series backs up a bit. The "Mango Tango" is required to be applied over a very dark/near black basecoat, so the sealer Jeff used is a "9 out of 10" dark gray.

InSealer.jpg

Then the white basecoat applied, then the pearl coat (3-stage paint), allowed to dry, and then the centerline established:

Stripes01.jpg

Stripes02.jpg

Then the layout, taping & masking of the actual stripe pattern

Stripes03.jpg

Stripes04.jpg

Then the areas showing white are blocked, and re-shot with the dark gray sealer to ensure color consistency

So Jeff sent me this picture:

InColor_00.jpg

This one was taken by his "paint guy" at the wholesale house. This is the solid pigments/flake/micas/whatever to make a gallon of Mango Tango! About 70% of it is clear, the remaining 30% is maroon, yellow, red, and black!

With the pace this has happened, I'm thinking this will be assembled and ready to rock over the weekend.

Any time/plan for retrieving it ?

Clunking around the logistics of around/over/after the Easter weekend.

We're headed to IL for my grandson's Christening (on Easter). Since I'm 5/8 the way to Indianapolis... why not keep going?

It usually takes Jeff a couple of weeks to screw one of these back together after "cut-n-buff", and he doesn't have a problem with it hanging around for a little while.

Sounds like a reasonable plan...just daily trailer rental while sitting, but it would still be less than a separate trip later.

When traveling thru IL, don't forget to go online within 14 days to pay the tolls. The signs seemed misleading when I went to PA and I waited for an invoice and got charged twice as much in "late fees" as the actual toll cost. I sent a check for the toll and explained how I felt about their misleading payment process. I think the Chicago mob is alive and well, running the toll roads. I avoided IL on this trip to FL...shorter to go down thru IA and MO anyway..thumbsup

Nothing monumental to report...

Called Jeff the other day, and he said "I'm rubbin' on it!". He mentioned that there's only a few boogers in the paint, and only he will be able to tell where they were when he's done.

Sheryl's going to head to Illinois Thursday or Friday before Easter to get some Grammy time and help out Sammy (Being the Choral & Liturgical Director at Easter is busy time!).
I'm headed to Illinois with John Jr. the Saturday before Easter (hauling a big box of sailboat fuel). Have Easter at Sammy's house, then it's Leonardo's Christening on Monday.

Tuesday morning Sheryl & John head back to Mpls, and I go east to Indy... Pick up the car, bench race & BS awhile, then head back to IL that afternoon. Spend the night at Sammy's.
Wednesday morning hit the road to Mpls, arriving mid-afternoon.

I've taken the week off. Plan is once I'm back to the 40 Watt, return the trailer, and give the car a serious mechanical once-over. Not that I don't trust Jeff, but he did take a lot of it apart.
I need to hang the rear bumper, add a ducting piece to the radiator opening, screens to the brake vent holes, and contemplate if I'm going to put the nose/trunk/fender badges on.

Jeff sent me a few pics today...

He's been "rubbin' on it... and buffin' on it".

Wet sand down to 3000g, and then a buff session with Wizard's compound and SHINE!!

He's already touched up overspray in the wheelhouses, etc. with bedliner/undercoat, and tomorrow will set it back on the frame and start final re-assembly.

Another batch of photo's...

Re-assembly and "marriage" of the body to the chassis has happened. According to Jeff there was no drama, everything dropped into place as expected, and he'll start hanging things with hinges tomorrow!

Other than Chicago 'burbs traffic, the trip to Bloomington IN was uneventful... until I crested the rise before Jeff's shop and saw:

Pickup_01.png

He had #9365 "posed" out front of his house garage waiting for me.

Spent a few hours at his place bench racing, going over details, and settling the bill. Then we walked over to his neighbor's place to chat. (I'm terrible with names for the first 347 times I hear it...) but his neighbor is an elderly gearhead (80+) who has a beautiful '65 Chevelle 300 sedan. Other than a repaint about 20 years ago it's all original and unmolested. 6-banger, P-glide, power steering & brakes and 96k on the clock. A perfect example of the typical working-man's family car of '65.

Got the Roadster loaded up, hauled back to Sammy's house for overnight, then back to Mpls. It's now safely tucked away in the 40 Watt.
