We have experience in this as the 78 Elky he had in high school had the same defective tire issue on the r/rear.

It had all new shoes, r/rear wore out prematurely. I suggested to him I would replace that tire, due to the fact it was obviously defective, but the next one was on him.

Next one lasted longer.

Been a while since an update.
These pictures were taken today for the most part.
Son-in-law Ron is more ambitious than I am.
Stripping white ElCamino frame for blaster.
Frame is as pristine as they get.
Exhaust was kinda rusty.
This was the car where the fuel line had a hole in it over the axel kick up. Body mounts were "dead" rubber, really compressed, causing wear thru.

Didn't you use our friend at JT powder coat for your frame?

Wrestling with that or just paint it like Biskwik.

Blue Elky is POR 15

Biskwik frame got a good blast of product from Ziebart when that was assembled.

Will do the same on both Elky's.

I also have two sedan trunk lids I had stripped several years ago, they have some pinholes.

Never got them primed, have some flash rust.  FREE!!

I will ultimately post in classified if no one notices here.

Update!
Frame stripped, heading to blaster. Parts all over the place!

 

Really a pristine frame almost NO pits.

Little detailing this weekend, out for powdercoat next week.

 

Bought some front control arms on Craig's list powder-coated and re-bushed.
Going to re-use springs, need to deal with trailing arms, I think I have some boxed ones somewhere, still looking.
Part of my search and destroy project this weekend!
Still sorting in Farmington.
Hope to find everything before I take the frame in next week.

Son -in-law is far more ambitious than I am, he wanted to roll the frame to the new building.

Thus, the progress shown in these pictures.

My thoughts on Pertronix. I have the conversion in 3 of my cars. The latest, the III edition is the best and paired with the correct, matching coil, have been flawless. The coil is available in black and with the label turned to the firewall, is 90% un-noticable as a replacement. Removal of the label will look nearly identical to original.
I, also have their "look alike" billet distributor on 2 more engines, again with matching black coils. The billet body is a tad shiny to fool knowledgeable car junkies, but a few swipes with ultra-fine scotchbrite, dulls it down a little and passes muster much better. I've had a number of people tell me I should go HEI and when I inform them that what they see IS high output, electronic ignition, they look skeptical. I also say that they will never see a huge, ugly GM style HEI distributor on any of my engines. They just aren't necessary for a street cruiser.

Rear axle, we do have the axle master in our ranks and I bet he could have it done much sooner than a year...

Sorry Stan, but with your turnover rate, you gotta admit, it kinda fits...

This guy is suppose to be pretty good at conversions to HEI, using your old distributor.  A couple of 66 Guys in Phoenix have recommended him.  But I think he recently had an accident and is slow.  I always check for the two wires and know if there is a Pentronix or similar ignition under the cap.  And the 204 logo on the original coil is very visible.  Good reading.

Differential issue.

Biskwik has a beat 12 bolt, posi probably 5:56 gears.
Fourth gear by time I cross the intersection, 3000rpm at 55mph, barely drivable.

I have a complete fresh 4:10 posi in another 68 basket case I acquired.
Seller was cloning up a big block car from a 39000 mile 6 cylinder stick.
Should be good, guy was a square shooter, had a built 66 post also.

Biskwik was originally delivered with a 3:55 posi gear.
Probably an ok all purpose gear for most uses.
It was then raced, a lot!
Current housing has some grenade marks inside.

I have 3 (three) 12 bolt open housings purchased complete, gutted, stripped and in cosmetic reconditioning phase.

Choice:
Continue to screw around trying to come up with a freshened 12 bolt 3:55 posi in one of my gutted housings for Biskwik.
Just move the 4:10 complete assembly from basket case to Biskwik
Pull basket case diffi and switch gears to 3:55 install in Biskwik.
Park a spare roller diffi assy. under Biskwik and get Biskwik converted back to 3:55
Biskwik housing is not pitted, little rust, nice appearance.

Sometimes having inventory creates too many possibilities.
Still have possibility of my Crate 427 GM motor for Biskwik.
Switch to auto, as the Muncie probably would not be happy with the almost 500 lbs of torque from the 427.
427-2004r built, probably 3:31 or 3:55 gear.
The basket case has disc brakes, all new bushings, ball joints, blasted and painted frame and suspension.
Could be put together and slide under Biskwik, move Biskwik complete current set up under basket case.

Remember, the frame under Biskwik came from another very dry Arizona car.
So, not original, not like I am messing with a #s match deal, most original drivetrain is long gone.

See,
Too many choices.
Easiest is to continue plan A, build a 3:55 out of one of my 12 bolt housings.
Bolt into Biskwik, play with 427 combo in other detailed frame at later time.

Now I am confusing myself!!

I do have the luxury of being able to deal with the distributor in house.

The Muncie will be good with the 427...that was what came in it originally...

Yep, they will, eventually, stretch and give out. My '70 454 Chevelle ate it's original M22 on the drag strip.

The new, M23, super case "Muncies" are rated for higher torque and have a steel mid-plate to prevent flex.

The 496 in the '66 is estimated at ~550 torque. Hopefully, the M20 will live behind it for a while.

No auto in the hauler.... I prefer picking the gear for myself. It's an old habit from 40 years of driving truck, the last 28 with 15 speeds to choose from...

Auto Gear is the manufacturer, but they where bought out a while ago and the new "owner's" website isn't very user friendly.

There are several sellers who have far more info on their websites, this is just one for info and reference. The cool thing is, you can spec a few different gear sets to work with the 3.55 rear gear and get better off the line acceleration, similar to the M20 2.52 low gear.

I would recommend Jody Hague at Jody's Transmissions, but his website is STILL under construction, after 2 years, and is basically worthless. He instructs people to call him and discuss their needs. Could still be an option, if you decide to pursue this.

Time for update:
Ordered and received distributor and coils from summit, thanks Mitch for your advise.
Dropping Exhaust manifolds off for ceramic coating tomorrow.
Still need to order wire set.

Son-in-Law working on firewall, floor and all plumbing.

May try and get glass in prior to Bowtie Brunch.

Goal at Brunch, assemble trans, engine, manifolds, wiring, distributor set in car.
