Anyone have experience with installing vent window assembly seal assembly weather stripping?

Well I decided to install new vent window weather stripping because I have the assembly out of the door.  I  bought Metro, their  cost about $300, but I got it for less on eBay. I looked over it  carefully and all seams good. This is in my 66 but should install in other years. I would appreciate any tips as some of you may have done this.  Installation #6 seems to indicate there might be an issue.  And the Note At the end has me wondering.

Well, everything is apart. Most difficult part was getting the old rubber out as it had turned into a hard plastic(screwdrivers, pliers, hammer, chisels, and cut off wheel).  New metro weather striping does not have  steel backing like original.j

IMG_1579.jpegNot happy with metro vent seals.  Poor install statements.  No install clips. No metal rib like originals.  They need to be trimmed to fit properly!!  no mention of this in install instructions.  No mention of what to use when installing the seals, like soapy water, windex, lithium lube , etc. photo shows area that NEEDS to be trimmed, this photo is from my other 66, probably the same for other years. I was able to reuse some old clips.  The only way to bend them for use without breaking was to heat with a torch to bright red, them open them up.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner, Jim. I did replace the vent seals on my '66 about 12 years ago and experienced some of the same issues you did. I don't remember what brand of seals I used, but it may have been Metro. I bought a number of seals from them when they gave the Camaro Club a discount. I don't recall if any of the seal kits offered now have the steel backer in the rubber....they should...

Buyer BEWARE,  I CALLED METRO TODAY, the sales man seemed to know about all issues.  He said there kit had the steel rib.  I bought a kit that was opened, the package had the instructions and Thad the metro part number stamped on the instruction sheet, seller had 100% rating and sold a lot or part and had a lot on Nos parts for sale.  I think someone stuff a set of seals from a different vender after he took out the metro seals. Or older metro seals didn’t have the rib.  The seller probably bought them cheap at a swap meet.  Live and learn.

I used 3m weather stripping glue to glue the seals to the angles pot metal piece. I was able t get 4 of the Old clips to hold the other side seal in place(hop it holds).  Hope to make it to Randy’s on Saturday.

If there is a hole on the opposite side, it's a roll pin, which I think it is. If no hole then an Allen screw.

Jim, I have a couple vent handles here somewhere. I "think" they are decent used like what you have there. I'll try to remember to look for them.

Passenger side.  I can never figure out what side is what.  Looking from front of car or sitting in the can.

I can't weld stainless with my Mig, but my spot welder should be able to do that. The caveat would be IF the contact tip will fit in the channel. I'll need to dig that out and measure it sometime soon.
I do have a Tig and stainless wire, but it would take a lot of practice to attempt a repair on that part without destroying it LOL.

All automotive reference for sides has been sitting in or standing behind a vehicle for +/- 70 years. Being in the auto repair industry for years, I had to know this as parts guys just rolled their eyes if we didn't know.

I found the vent handle, but it is still the new one I bought 8 years ago, haven't swapped it out for the one in the car yet. If I recall, I need to get a smaller punch first. I'll put that on my "to do" list and see if I can't get that done before the tech session at Randy's, if you are coming.

The weld tips on my spot welder are just a little under 1/2". If the felt channel is that wide, I should be able to spot weld that bracket back on.

Plan to be at Randy’s, see you there.  By new one do you mean the original style or a new style?  Hoping it is the same style as mine.   I don’t have a punch.

NPD claims they have the correct original style.

I don't think it's the same as my original, but at 33 degrees in that building this morning I didn't take time to compare. That may be why it never got swapped too. Once it warms up some, I'll get next to the car and look at it.
