Car’s down until further notice.  As some of you may know, I changed axle seals last fall after finding a puddle of gear lube under the left rear tire last summer.  Upon further inspection, the left axle shaft was in bad shape.  Changed seals, went for a little spin, thought all was good.  Fast forward to last Sunday.  Went for a spin and all was well.  As I was getting closer to home, the odor of burning rubber (no burnouts) and gear lube was quite strong.  So, I’ve decided to wait on the sidelines until the parts come from Quick Performance and I have time to install them.  Hopefully back in action no later than the evening of July 1.  I want to do some freedoming that weekend.  So, you could say I’m in CAC even though the car is still together for now.  No limited slip, for now.  That’s a future project.493D0A62-EC90-4B86-89EC-37D9E282840D.jpeg

Would "axle saver" bearings get you on the road sooner?
I have a set I never used, I think for 12-bolt, not sure if they're different.

Thanks for the offer, Derek. All of the parts came from Quick Performance on Thursday, so now it’s finding some time. Every weekend in June is booked up as of yesterday. Wedding next weekend, grad party the following weekend, wedding and grad party the weekend after that, etc. Maybe I can carve out a little time during the evening this week. It shouldn’t take more than a few hours. Famous last words, though……

So, I’ve found some time. If anyone wants to come over and make jokes at my expense, July 1st is the day. A few small projects and the axle project. I’ll provide lunch and beverages. Small tasks include: New steering wheel install, thermostat housing gasket, and a quick trip under the dash to free up one of the cables from the new stereo installed by Chris S. and I last summer. PM me on here or email me if you’d like to come over. That way I can give you the address and get a count for food. If nobody responds, no biggie. I can’t imagine it’d be really interesting watching me work on the car.

Where did you get the axle bearings ? I bought a pair from my local NAPA a few weeks ago and the outside diameter was too small. Hope you don't run into this same issue. We just put the originals back in, as this 12 bolt won't see the road with 4.56 gears.

You get the C&C rescue team working on the axle bearings and seals and they'll have that done by the time you get that cable pulled...thumbsup

I got all of the axle parts from Quick Performance.  From what I’ve heard, they’re top notch.

Chris…..do you have the proper slide hammer to pull the bearings?  If not, at work we have a bearing puller that I’m pretty sure will do the trick.

One quick question for all: Should I get new wheel studs or can I reuse the old ones? I have a brass hammer to drive them out if needed.

Awesome! The more, the merrier. Everyone good with pizza for lunch? I could also fire up the grill. What’s everyone like for soft and/or not so soft drinks.  I’m guessing if it’s an officially sanctioned club event, the not so soft drinks will have to wait until the official club business has been taken care of.

I'll see if I can get Bryan to put out an APB for this to be a club event, so everyone will be aware. Kind of short notice and on a Holiday weekend, but we'll give it a shot. If enough people are present for a meeting, the club can help with food costs too. We have plenty of funds and nothing has been happening for months, as the president has been super busy and slacking off.

I would like to thank all that came over and helped. Special thanks to Chris S. and Chris P. for the parts run. I truly appreciate all of the help. Now, to let the sealant set on the water neck, fill the rad, and go for a spin. Any suggestions on where to get rid of old coolant?

Hope everything works as planned and you can enjoy the car again.

If you don't have a recycling center that accepts the coolant, the best place is down the washtub drain, where it will go thru the treatment plant where it will be diluted by millions of gallons of other "stuff" and neutralized.

Anti freeze is fine down the drain, never in storm sewer.

Oak Grove has a drum next our oil recycle tank. I believe many cities are doing that now. May be worth checking into.
