I have Pypes Race Pros on my Camaro. Love 'em. It is surprisingly quiet at idle and cruise but once you put your foot in it, they really growl.... I can even hear a conversation with other people in the car.

Here's flo-pros on a relatively tame 400hp small block with Flow-Tech Afterburner headers and a crossover pipe. I don't think they're too loud, but they have a nice tone at idle and running:

This was from about the same time last year - 1st startup of the season. This is with the 383 installed. It's a Pypes "Street Pro" system with X pipe.

That's about what my Camaro sounds like, minus the beautiful cam lope. I should've bought that 383...

I have dynomax mufflers on mine, is mild at idle but is loud when at wide open. Does not have any droan in the car when at cruise like flowmaster.

I am going to pick up a set of thrush 2 chambers this week. I believe Flowmaster makes thrush or vice versa and they sound very close to a 40 series. Walk in is I think $35-$37/ muffler at O'Reilly's and with my discount they are about $28-$29/ muffler.

Running the Flowmasters in the past they were great, but do not want to shell out that kind of $$ again. Some of the Magnaflows sound pretty good too.

I myself am not a glasspack fan and almost any muffler with "turbo" in the name is guaranteed to not sound good. Definetly go with something chambered.

The Flowmaster 40 is $69 each at Summit but tell me more about what you are looking at Andy, maybe shoot me a part number to look at.

The set of Flowmasters I had in the past droned like CRAZY in the cabin. They claim the new series don't do that but read reviews on-line before you buy. I, personally, won't buy Flows anymore.

I am looking at Thrush 17656, they are 2 1/2" in and out with offset inlet and center outlet. Otherwise 17659 is offset inlet outlet in the same diam. Should be stock at O'Reillys or order from the warehouse. I will pick mine up tomorrow or sometime this week. I work there part time so with discount they are $29.89 each, otherwise about $2 more than Summit (~$35) on walk in.

The flows I had did drone, but that was behind a ~650hp big block so I couldn't tell if it was the mufflers or the entire combination. They were the Super 40's with turn downs, any full exhaust would be a lot better on the sound, anything with turndowns directly after the muffler will cause that.

Saw these at SEMA, they had a working display and there's no drone. They use an internal butterfly that opens/clsoes based on exhaust flow to cut sound wave.

More reading ... more listening. Being I am planning on full pipes all the way to the muffler (correction, rear bumper) any cabin drone should be at a minimum.

O'Reilly's say they have to get that part out of IA, did you order yours already?

The "drone" is created inside the muffler and is caused by the baffles. Bouncing the sound waves off each other with baffles is how the noise gets cancelled. Having full tail pipes will get the remaining noise farther from the cabin but will do nothing to change the drone. In fact, the drone may be louder and more noticable with full tail pipes.

It all depends what rpm you're at on the freeway too! Since I rarely get over 2,000 in 6th gear now, i have no drone from my Flowmasters...and they don't have tailpipes at all anymore- just turndowns. But if I wind it up, it'll get loud. I'm fine with that!

Where did you get that info about Flowmasters Chris?

I saw a report on mufflers and the quietest muffler that also made the most power was a in link on TC. This test was done on a Pontiac wagon that was a drag car with a 455 and was a record holder for some class it was in. The artical and such has been on Team Chevelle as well a few times and I can't find the original link the funniest part is they are also the cheapest.

FWIW, I have Keith's old Flowmasters on my car. He had the flowmasters w/ H-pipe and swapped to an X-pipe and some other mufflers that were supposed to make more power. I remember he was dissappointed that he didn't gain any MPH at the drag strip... and that was a 496 breathing through them.

I don't know what "series" mufflers they are, but everyone that asks is shocked to find out they are Flowmaster, as they aren't obnoxious and don't have that tin-can sound to them.

I remember Keith Anderson like Derek mentioned said thats what he discovered. I think Tony has talked about that before too but I wont speak for him on that. Plus, mainly. The guys on Team Chevelle that race had found that out too. There are a lot of posts about it costing them a few 10ths and HP on the dyno and the track.
