1/4 glass roller removal/install

how does a lower 1/4 glass roller come off? I see it's threaded but the darn stud piece broke off after 2 twists. It has 2 larger washer type "insulators" sammiching the glass, one looks like it might be a spanning nut type, is that right?

Yes, and you need a spanner wrench to remove it. They are very tight and usually rusted to boot. If I remember right, I got mine where I could get at it with a drill and drilled it out.

Some careful work with a bench grinder and/or a dremel tool can yield a "spanner" or "snake-eyes" removal tool on a junk socket of the the correct diameter.

Just measure the distance between holes, find a socket of the correct diameter, and grind away everything but two "nubs", 180 deg's apart, on the rim. (had to make one to get the bleeding &^%$*$ nuts off both the headlight and wiper switches on my '65 and Jenna's '66.)

I also used this procedure to make a "3-nub" ignition switch bezel-nut remover from a hunk of tubing.

Snap ring pliers work really well on the wiper switch nut on the 66-67 and may for the 65 too. I bought the 3 pin wrench for the ignition bezel for $10
I'm not sure if the pins on a snap ring wrench would hold on the roller nut.

I have the tool, that I purchased from somewhere it looks something like what John D describes with two posts 180 degrees apart. Fits inside a 3/4" inch socket so you can use a ratchet. Your welcome to use it?

I have something similar to that too, it's for taking off the gears on the back wheel of a bicycle, could modify that. I also have a snap ring pliers set, but the tips are too small.

I drilled it out, didn't take long except that I had a low battery which died. Other drill was also dead. Took the time to install my package panel.

Also got another section of insulation. It's not Hushmat or Dynamat. OFf brand NAPA sells. I'll try it out, it's gotta be better than what I took out.

btw, the new pulley went in easy. It's threaded and held into place by one side of the glass insulators. Now to get it back in and finish the back seat area.

Check that, I had to pull that pulley back out and drop it down the channel, THEN reattach it to the glass. My glass never really worked well on that side and I know why-nothing holding the glass from pivoting side to side. Now its all back the way it should be and I even greased the areas where the rollers run and it's so much smoother.

Got something different than the Hushmat I was using too. It's the Thermo Tech Super Sonic Acoustical Mat from NAPA. Seems decent. Priced right. Same characteristics as Dynamat or Hushmat but with a vinyl type backing.
