Western 'burbs Friend needs help
Permalink

I have a buddy who inherited his Grandpa's '75 Olds Delta 88 land-yacht.

From what I've been told he's had it to several places, trying to get a leaky axle seal repaired to no avail. I'm guessing he's either got a wiped out bearing and it's wallering around (destroying the seal), or a grooved axle shaft.

I don't know if there's a "speedy sleeve" kit, or a "offset/new surface on the axle" bearing kit available for this thing.

Does anyone know of a good shop in the Western 'burbs that actually fixes stuff and aren't parts-changers? I've got too many irons in the fire to tackle this, and I don't have a press or puller to do the job.

Me & my big mouth...
I've volunteered myself to look into this job, and have done some research. It looks like there's axle-saver/integrated seal bearing for this thing.
What I don't have is a slide-hammer rig to pull the old one out, or a driver kit (big enough) to seat the new one in.

Anyone willing to loan these tools out to me?

I met up with Chris S., and he loaned me the bearing puller.
Turns out it wasn't needed.
The car had a BOP axle. The passenger side wheel bearing was TOAST. Best guess was the outer race fractured, right at the lip where the rollers are held fore/aft in the race. This let the rollers "do their own thing" and waller around. Eventually broke a few windows in the cage, and proceeded to destroy themselves and the inner race wear-surface. He was only miles/yards/feet away from a catastrophic failure.

We were pulling metal out of the axle tube (magnet) for a long time. Wound up putting a block under the driver's wheel, and lowering the axle - canting it seriously down on the passenger side. Burned up 3 or 4 cans of Brake-Klean washing out the axle tube and diff sump into drain pans. It didn't seem that any chunks made it to & through the inner bearing (carrier), but the lube had a nasty silver cast to it - like you dissolved anti-seize in it.
Luckily my local NAPA had a bearing and seal (MADE IN THE USA! - NOT where the bearing we removed was from wink/wink)... And luckily a buddy of mine was free and willing to let me use his hydraulic press & dies to get the remains off and the new stuff on.

It was a long day of dirty/greasy/stinky work, but the Oldsmobeast is back on the road.
(This car isn't really worth all this work. It really is a rusted out POS, but it was ordered new by Grandpa, been in the family 50 years, runs surprisingly well, and will be doing "Leave the Church after the Wedding" duty come July. It's more of an emotional attachment. Who knows its fate after July)

Thanks Again Chris, and I'll contact you soon to get your tools back!
