My wife messaged me today: dryer started squealing and sounds like it is thumping. had an occasional squeal before. She does a little searching, finds a "top 6 things" video.

 

I come home, we pull it out, figure out how to crack it open, and look at the rollers. They look fine. then I see the belt. It's resting halfway THROUGH the tensioner pulley. Pretty neat.

Call Day appliance, they're closing, but they have a bunch and it's pretty cheap. Hit that after work tomorrow.

It's literally 1 screw holding it on, re-hook the spring at one end, and one screw to put the access cover back on.

 

Oh, then re-attach the gas and water line.

 

it's nice having tools and some level of ability. I'm convinced that if I wasn't home at all for a couple days my wife would have fixed it herself too. She replaced the kitchen faucet last weekend and isn't afraid to try.

Wow, lucky it was in the open to get at easily.
New belt too, or is that another major project to replace ?

Belt was good-not shredded. looked like it would be a PITA todo too,.... we'll see over time.

Yeah, there was a simple access cover. While replacing it, I quickly looked at the rollers. One had a flat spot, but the other 3 were fine. after the ONE screw to attach he tensioner and re-hook the spring (thanks to my drum brake spring experience of sliding the one down the screwdriver shaft to hook it), it was done. a quick test had 4 fast thumps then settled into a nice whir. The belt found it's spot on the drum again. all done for now.

I like the feeling of being able to actually fix something, and the prescribed way too.

Common problem. Especially on Samsung & LG dryers. That pulley assembly is standard truck stock on my work van.

Well, the tensioner job led to doing the drum rollers too. One of mine was flat spotted, which caused the thump. Not noticed until we had wet towels in, which we didn't on the test before. After some figuring, the front came off, took off more stuff and the front two were pretty easy to do. I could have Johnny 5'd (disassemble) the drum out to do the rears, but I bailed and only did one of those two.

Pro tip: Day Appliance parts has tensioners alone, or a kit that has the tensioner, belt, and 4 wheels for not much more. The tensioner and belt separate would be same or more than the kit, FYI. The ladies in the coon rapids location were super nice, knowledgeable, and hooked me up with what I needed. It always helps to not be a d-bag to the parts people, sometimes they control the destiny (cost for sure) of your project.
