Hi guys it’s been a while. I am nearing the homestretch on finishing my nut and bolt rotisserie restoration on my 1970 Chevelle and I’m looking for some help/advice. I have a 12 bolt posi Axel code CCH series 2 with 2.73 gears in it. I want to upgrade to 3.73 gears so I’m planning to buy a new posi carrier and gears. Any suggestions on brands would be greatly appreciated. Also looking to understand if my current axles will fit or if I need to replace them. My car is a 454 has been bored and stroked to 502 with a M22. So it has some decent power. It’s moving along very well and I would like to get it completed by mid May. Those who remember me know that I have done a lot of these cars but this is one area that my knowledge is not where I would like it to be. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks. Tim

Hi Tim, hope things have been good for you. I was wondering where you were at with the Chevelle. Sort of thinking you would have had it done by now.
Anyway, the original Eaton posi's are still a very good direction to go for this. There are others, as you know, but some of them use a cone for grip and don't seem to be as good as the clutch type units and can chatter more. With the Eaton, your original axles will fit as well. The other question is, do you plan to use all that power with traction and stress the 50 year old axles ? If so, you may want to consider new, aftermarket, axles that are stronger. If not, and the bearing races are good, they should be just fine.
I "think" I still have an empty 3 series carrier that you can have, but Chris P, the resident differential wizard, said it will cost nearly as much to build it as to buy new.
Hopefully, Chris will see this and respond also.

Hey Mitch. Thanks for the information and the offer on the series 3. . I put the car on hold for other priorities. Family first. took care of my dad until he passed away last year. Bought a lake home, seven grandkids and all kinds of other things. I’m retiring at the end of this year and I want to get this car done and most likely sold soon. Good point on the axles generally inexpensive in the whole scheme of things with the car. I was looking at a Yukon carrier but don’t know much about them. Hope you’re doing well and all your projects are going the way you want them to. I’ll keep you guys updated as I get it finished.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. Lost my Mom in December too.
Yukon is a good name too and if your going to sell the car, should be a selling point.
I moved 18 months ago and all my projects were on hold for a year.
I've tried 3 times now to get my Chevelle interior painted the correct color and gloss. Even hauled it all the way to Wytheville, Virginia only to be disappointed. Gotta learn how to paint myself soon...

My condolences Tim on the loss of your Dad.  As I'm not surprised, sounds like you were a good son by sharing his final months together, which I'm sure meant more than anything to him.

I've used Yukon parts from Quick Performance in Ames (Des Moines), IA.  Their service was quick, the prices good, and their reputation is strong.  I didn't install the parts myself, but the mechanic that did said the kit was complete and went in with no issues.  I'd recommend them, and I think Chris P. also uses them but he'll need to chime in.

If you're not putting slicks on, and the surface where the bearing rides is good, I'd re-use the stock axles.
Chances are though, there's probably a groove worn in.

If the car was a keeper and you were going to pound on it hard, I'd consider eliminating the C-clips and having Moser (Ford style bearing) ends welded onto the housing but if you're plannning to sell, the return on investment isn't there.

 I installed the Moser ends, I have 2 housings, none of the 4 axle shaft were very good, and I also wanted to upgrade the brakes, so I welded on the Impala ends and installed 11" Impala brakes. Big improvement on the brakes, I also installed stouter axles, True Trac diff and a set of 3.73s. I agree with your comment "generally inexpensive in the whole scheme of things with the car" also cheap insurance as you don't know what your old abused axle will handle until you get there.

I would also recommend the quick performance package with posi, bearings, and gears. The Posi is supposed to be a Yukon duragrip so it is at least a name brand part and not a china knock off. I put one of there kits in my 66 and have not had amy issues with It. I would also get axles as likely the bearing surfaces are going to be junk and the replacement axles are a stronger material then stock. If you were building It to keep and thrash on I would go true trac and ford ends like bob did. That is my next upgrade to my camaro rear end.

Mitch sorry about your mom. And thanks everyone. It was a tough enough year without Losing parents. Thanks for all the information everybody. Also looking at the Detroit carrier. Probably gonna order all the parts tomorrow to get delivered by Tuesday. My son owns an auto body supply business and is a dealer for Motor State Distributing

When I’m done with the car anybody who wants to see it is more than welcome to. I’ve done quite a few cars and I will say this is probably the nicest one I am doing. highly detailed.

 

also will be selling all my left over 69-72 parts when I am done and the 74 Vette
