BBC Headers

Hi guys and gals,

I am  looking for some help / information on headers. I am trying to get my 70 Chevelle completed. It has a big block with a rock crusher manual transmission.  So as I sit here and try to recover from the flu I thought I would take a look to see what you guys are up to and ask for some help. I’m looking to buy a new set of good headers and I’m trying to decide if I want to get stainless, coated or what the best ones would be so I don’t get a bunch of rusty headers under the hood.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated for finish and brands.

Thanks

Tim H

Lemons seem to be the go to for top of the line headers. But they aren't cheap.

A shop recently relocated from Burnsville to Lake City.  They make custom stainless steel headers.

If you're looking for off the shelf headers, I've had good luck with ceramic coated ones.  I've used Flow Tech in the past for SBC's that held up well.

Dang Tim, sorry to hear you have that flu crud. Hope you can get over it soon.

For me, any name brand of headers seems to be a crap shoot. Some of the Hedmann and Hookers I've bought fit fine and others needed major butchering to clear suspension components and steering shaft. The BB headers, especially, can vary a lot, depending on tube size. For that reason, I never buy coated headers, figuring I will need to tweak them some. Once I have them fitting, I take them to Race Coatings In Forest Lake for Cermachrome coating. I'm sure there is a shop closer to you that can do that too.

I've always heard good things about the Lemon's brand too and they don't come coated either and for a price 3 times an off the shelf header, I can do a LOT of tweaking.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking about stainless but Mitch that sounds like a good option. The engine is now a 502 so it will need to breathe which means big tubes. Hopefully will have the car done by June.

Yeah, I've found the big tubes are the worst fitting and need modifications.

I have a 496 in my '66 now and bought large tube Hedmanns and spent 2 days hacking them to fit decent...doh

Post up some pics of the car and progress. We need input on the forum..cool
