WTB 400 SBC bare block

Looking for a a standard bore 400 block for my chevelle engine build. Any one have one stashed away they would like to part with?

How do I Identify if actual factual 400s/b ?
Have an 81 elky that is supposed to be a 400, installed by previous owner.
It will eventually be coming out, with a different motor going in.
It tossed a belt and overheated, don't know if good core or not.

The casting number off the back of the block behind the drivers side head. I think the last three numbers are 509, 817, or 511 to be a 400.

 Which one is the 4 bolt main from the trucks ?

The 511 is the 4 bolt and it has 3 frost plugs on each side of the block where the o5hers have only 2 on each side.

 Did more reading about these engine last night and a few people claim some 509's had the 4 bolt too.

After reading I remembered all the 400's I removed in the mid/late seventies for spun rod bearings and water jacket cracks...headscratch

I never did replace one with another 400, we always put a 350 in it's place.

Just go buy a Dart block and have something really different..thumbsup

Karl is the car blowing white smoke that coolant is getting into the cylinders? I’m a little afraid if it was overheated that bad if the block might be damaged or cracked.

And check the dipstick for white/grey sludge or overfull...

Usually an overheated block is OK, but almost always can be saved by decking it a little, which is a good idea anyway. It can inexpensively be checked for cracks.
