Have to admit I was skeptical about 2 years ago when I signed up for FB only because the Mid-America Chevelle club I belong to doesn't have a forum and does most of their communication through the FB page or email. But I have to say I've found a lot of other FB pages I follow related to collector car stuff, Chevelle's across the nation, other interests I have, and have reconnected with some old friends and keep track of what my friends and family are up to.

I say it's worth doing as long as a person can pick and choose what things they follow, and what they don't (like political, religious, and other topics that cause controversy).

It may help generate more excitement about the club IMO. I know of a few NCC members and former members that are on it, and see them on the national Chevelle FB pages as well.

For those not on FB, there have many times I'd like to share a page or topic with them, then can't because they aren't on it. It's like anything else, there are good things about it, and bad. At least there is the option to 'unfollow' or not see people's posts that offend or if you don't want to see that they fed their dog that day after they brushed their teeth (some people seem to live their lives on FB, lol).

Oh, FB isn't just for young people anymore either. I'd say the majority are over 25 years old and up. Most of my FB friends are over 40. Most of the youngin's are on twitter, snap chat, and other social media.

I keep thinking about giving it up... it's stupid, but I find decent deals on the for sale groups once in a while which keeps me going back.

I, too, have reconnected with people, found interesting groups, etc. But I know people can get too involved.
I think it can't hurt to have a presence if someone is willing to keep posting stuff often enough to get attention. It could be a picture from a show, of a member's car, or a comment about an event, a request for information, anything.

I am on it, spend a decent amount of time there.

It's a great way to communicate with large groups, share things simply, and find new interests. We use it very successfully in promoting Cruise for Troops.

I can understand reluctance to use it, there's a vast amount of garbage on there too.

I thought we already had a FB page...my wife follows it...she keeps asking me who certain names are that are posting and I don't recognize them...maybe members, maybe just observers from afar.

You are correct Jon we already do have a facebook page. But not very many of what I'll call the "core members" use it or post anything to it. What I am trying to get an idea of is how many of our members are already on facebook and to make sure they are part of the allowed group for our page. Then in turn get them to post pictures or going here type of things on the page while we are at club events. My other thought is to also post things from the forum onto the page to ultimately try and draw in more interest in the club.

Im on it. Probably a bit too much as well. Bryan is right about the amount of junk that is on there. With as small as our club is, I still think this forum is the perfect main social media place for us to congregate with Facebook as more of another added resource. I still find there is still tons of great stuff on the internet forums.

I looked at the NSCC FB page today. I see a handful of members mostly posting classifieds. Many of those that post on FB are not on our membership roster and I am not sure why they are participating on our FB page. Chris, I don't know what you mean by "allowed members" on our FB page. My only concern about upping the club participation on FB is that some members mayl post things on our forum and some on FB so if a member wanted a full picture of current club activity they would have to spend time on two sites to get a full picture. Just seems to me we may be creating a division on getting club information. I can see posting something on FB directing any interested parties to our club website.

Just to throw one more issue into the mix and generate some discussion, it is always good to get some young blood into the club but more members does not necessarily make it a better club. We may want to think of ways to energize our existing membership into more participation in club activities. I am as guilty as any of not taking more of a leadership role in the club. There is a lot of talent and original ideas in the club membership we just need to draw it out.

Jon I am still figuring out some of this myself, but my understanding is to be able to post on the Facebook page you have to send a request and be let into the group by someone in the group already. Yes I also know that some of the people that are on their are not part of the club and I am still thinking about what to do related to that situation. Do we only allow members of the club and drop off people not part of the club I don't know at this point. But my main point Jon is not to move the club to Facebook but to use it as a tool to promote the club. I will have more info on this in the upcoming newsletter.

You also make a good point of trying to get members we already have more active in the club. If you have thoughts or ideas on this please let me know. I have a few thoughts myself but any other input is appreciated.

My understanding of a closed group on FB, is you have to be let in to read anything. By not letting non-members join the page, no one but members will see it. I think you need to have an "open" page for others to see/read it but may still need permission to comment on the page ?

Yea that is what I am trying to get figured out is if we can make it an open page so everyone can see it but still limit it to only members being allowed to post on it so it does not get cluttered with other garbage.

Chris I understand your objective, and commend you for your efforts. As a remote member let me toss out some thoughts that may be worth no more than you pay for them.

I treasure our site and have learned a lot here, I’ve had the opportunity to rub shoulders with some wonderful, experienced and knowledgeable people and have developed several life long friendships here. And of course a couple of my cars run just a little better and a little faster as a direct result of the NCC friends.

Jon makes an excellent point about communication confusion that results from multiple sources. Just turn on CNN, FOX, CBS or MSN and see how the same news or information is covered differently. Sometimes too much information is a problem.

This site and thus the club have been integral to each other for several years; it's how I and others found the club. It has been the center point for members projects, events, announcements, planning, technical research, fixing toilets and more for many years.

Facebook, though some would say very intrusive is an excellent source of communication, information and works well for many things, it could in fact easily replace this site. We as a group are not schooled in mass marketing, overly redundant communication systems or recruitment. We are car guys, it's what we do and we are good at it, stick with what we do best.

We have a website, a forum site, Facebook and a newsletter that comes out once a month, consolidate those down to one source. The forum is a trusted source for Chevelle information, keep it simple, streamline it keep good quality stuff on the forum and they will come.

I'm on probably way to much. I am also members of several Chevelle clubs from around the country and pretty much all of them are on there so it is kind of like one stop shopping.
