Found a 72 el camino for sale
Permalink

While on a run, I spied a 72 El Camino for sale.  I stopped by afterwards and talked with the guy.

He's had since 1990 or so but admits it pretty rusty and mostly good for parts now. In looking it over, the body is pretty much shot.  He is asking 2K for it as the yard would give him 1500 for it.  (Think there is room for some haggling).  PM me if you want his contact info.

The good

Engine has AC and cruise control

Tilt column

Nice bucket seats that were redone.  No longer has the bench seat.

Interior in good shape.

12 bolt posi rear (unsure the gears but he said they were probably low ratio,, (2.56 or 3.08?) as he got good gas mileage and the car never revved out

Power front disc brakes, rear drums

Chrome is in decent shape.

Dash looked decent

The Bad

350 V8 (needs plug wire and battery) (Holley carb with electric choke and aluminum intake manifold),

And the Ugly

Body and frame pretty rusty

Wondering what our resident '72 Elky expert thinks of this?  Especially now that he has 'extra' room.  stirpot

The buckets, tilt column, 12-bolt, and disc brakes are easily worth the asking price... question is if there's enough other stuff there to make it worth the time to part it out.

Plus.....the cruise control, AC components, chrome and bed trim. the frame would work on a vert or coupe, just needs a little shortening.  If it was closer I'd be looking at it. I would like to have the front 18" of the front fenders for a project..........so if someone gets it........

I didn't notice the cruise control... is that a factory unit?

Yep.  That's just like the vacuum parts that were on the last coupe I had with factory cruise.  Getting to be hard to find.

I think it is, looks like the factory setup. A better look at the turn signal arm on the steering column would help.

Must have doubled up on a different interior pic.  Here is a pic of the steering column.

Note the vacuum parts and hoses on the drivers fender.  That's what caught my eye for the cruise control:

How about some type of a group acquisition. Everyone decide what parts they want, then kick in a reasonable amount buy the car and distribute the parts.

Stan, here’s your complete AC package everything including compressor, brackets dash ducting vents and controls.

Here’s the frame for Tim‘s next project.

Here’s Daren’s rocker arm, engine and transmission

I know Mitch can always use a 12 Bolt

Derik can use the disc brakes setup on some project I’m sure.

I really do wish it was in my back yard.

If it's still available and my friend buys it, he will keep the seats and tilt. The cruise would be available.

No call back today either. I left my number again at 9 am...rolleyes

The car was tucked away further in side yard far enough that I really had to look.  It looks like they were doing to cleaning to the barn.

Maybe he does not want to sell it or just does not check his phone? dunno

He did call me. He works 6 days a week so it will be difficult to get there when he is around this week. Maybe we can make time next Tuesday when John is off work.

After talking with the owner and John, he is going to pass. The tilt column is an auto shift and John's car is a 4 speed. The only thing he would use is the buckets and it's not worth the cost and hassle to part out the rest for just the seats.
