Sounds like it's near my place if you are interested.  Looks like an 8.2 from the diff housing not having the square ends to it.

It's not a Chevy 8.2... must be BOP as it doesn't have the stamped upside-down "V" in the cover to direct oil to the outer bearings.

 Yep, it's a BOP and it's GONE...

Are you guys sure about it not being an 8.2"?  This looks exactly like the 8.2 that was in my 71 Malibu.  It didn't have the V cover on it, and that car was completely original.  Maybe they ran out of Chevy 10 bolts and subbed in a BOP when the car was built?

Yes, it is an 8.2 but not a Chevy. BOPs had the round cover and generally used a cone clutch system with 2 piece carrier for the posi. They also stayed with bolt in axles, where Chevy went the notorious c-clip route.

Yep, that's what's under my vert.  Got it from Chris P. and rebuilt by Steve S. since it was stronger and a better gear ratio with posi than the 8.2 Chevy 10 bolt that was original to the car.

I was referring to the BOP style features, and yes it's an 8.5.
