Car title search help

Long story short my step dad has an old austin healey he has owned forever but lost the title to it. We looked all over the car for a vin tag and cannot find one don't know if it ever was on the car. The car is titled to him and we have a license plate number. Anybody have a good contact at a DMV or something that can try to back trace by the license plate to see if can try to get a duplicate title without having the VIN number??

First off try MN DMV is St. Paul. Call 651-297-2126 or 651-296-6911, hopefully the numbers are still good. If not give me a call or email and I will see what I can do for you.

Will give that a try, just not sure how much they might be willing to help not having a VIN. But you never know till you try. Thanks

"owned forever" = I saw the car when I was 16. I'd love to see it move.

When they run the old plate, if there is a VIN associated with the vehicle it will show on the print out. One phone call should resolve the issue. Since this is a relative, hopefully still living, it should be a snap. Wish I was still working (not really) I could help out a lot easier.

One more question Jon, if the car has not had tabs in 30 years is the license plate likely to be in the system anymore?

It's hard to say I had a guy get a new title for a car not registered in almost 40 years it was still on record in his name it cost like 20 and a couple weeks to get new one. I have seen others from the 80's no longer in the system. I don't know if it would be in there but you can go to the DMV and ask them all the cars in your name.

Local DMV may not have it on their computer.  May have to go back through microfiche in St. Paul but I bet information is still available.  If you have problems, I "may" be able to call in an old favor, let me know if I can help.

When trying to get title info/replacements, my experience has been the DMV only keeps a title/plate on file for 7 years after the last renewal. After that, they purge it and it's gone.

Yep that is exactly what the DMV told me. It is not looking good at this point, may have to get a VIN assigned to it to get it retitled. Will see how far he wants to take it.

Did you have him ask if it's in his name still they would then have the vin as I said I got a title for a MN car last year that was last registered in 1974 and still in his name so it is not the case for all cars it's worth a shot as it would be the easiest.

It is supposed to be in his name, but so far it is not popping up when they have looked it up. Chasing one more thought on it will see what happens.
