Trunk Spatter paint ? Aqua-Black
Permalink

what is a good trunk spatter paint to get to match Aqua-Black ? I am hoping there is a good quality rattle can out there that I can jsut get a local Auto parts store. I read some need a clear coat over it when complete.

Please let me know what worked well for you thanks in advance.

I used Dupli-Color's trunk spatter on the smuggler's box project (NAPA). I was pleased with the results, but a few warnings:
- Like any paint, prep is key. Scuff the area with a scotch-brite, etc., and use a wax & grease remover.
- It comes out the can like a firehose, do a few test sprays on some cardboard!
- It takes a LONG time to dry. Allow for this. (May have been the day/humidity/temp, but it takes 3x than normal rattle can)
- It isn't "waterproof/resistant", plan on topcoating with clear for good durability.

The factory used sometine entirely different.  There is a product called Zolatone that probably has an  exact match.  It is a paint and does not need to be cleared.  The following in an article on Team chevelle.  You can search for more articles.  A big topic of discussion on TC.

There are different combinations for different years and different GM lines.  What car and year are you working on?   For example Black/white is correct for 66.  Most  venders sell a rattle cans  Black/Aqua.

It is the 72 Chevelle. I wish they made a red and black spatter but I could not find it. The cage part I am painting "Hamered balck" from Rustolium. It appears the trunk is Aqua-Black now. The pic attatched is not the best but I hope it gives a good idea of the color.

John yours looks pretty nice. I just have not had time to do to much to the car as far as finishing it up this winter. 4 kids into everything and we redid our kitchen ground up. My garage was a catch all fromt he kitchen and is still in shambles.

Zolotone works very well and you can get "correct " GM color match or almost any color combo you want ........ for a car you use alot I have never seen the clear coat/ rattle can work to keep moisture out plus it looks too glossy JMO ......... Zolotone is easy to spray with a cheap gun with home compressor and I think now you can buy one of those cheap spray handles to use on a can too ............ but yes good primer is key for moisture resistance even zolotone with no topcoat or will soften when moisture ( beer) trapped under trunk mat for a long time ....ask me how I know
Zolotone has a top coat too they use it in alum fish boats for the floor

Pretty sure it is or was made in Minneapolis area ........ http://www.zolatoneaim.com/trunk-spatter/#MSDS

I think the Zolatone Jim pointed out is probably the best. But if you're looking for something a little easier to apply with a rattle can, Eastwood has some different colors. (not sure how close it matches) I think you will have to put clear over the top of thier stuff though.

Zolatone website lists Menomonee Falls WI as home location.

NO distributors in MN. Closest one is Madison, WI.  It's possible a local paint supply could order it or maybe order on-line.

I ordered mine from Amazon (different color for a 65 Buick) but I'm sure you could get it some place in Minnesota. Hirschfield’s lists it as a product on there commercial site and I’m sure any professional auto paint store could get it. Be sure to get the accelerator or hardener.

It’s used in many applications beyond car trunks, aluminum boats, aircraft, farm equipment and industrial applications are a few.

Here’s the 65 Buick color.
