Credit card thieves got us.

Bank called Micheles cell phone and our house phone leaving messages on both to call them. Seems someone got her CC number and used it on a few purchases in Florida and once in the UK. Each time getting bigger. Credit card company put a halt on it and they needed us to return the call to verify if we had made any of the purchases. Highest purchase was 300 bucks. Neither of us had obviously made any purchases so they eliminated the charges so no harm, no foul. She never uses the card accept to pay bills or airline tickets.

Be carefull where you use your card. I will probably go back to using cash 90% of the time now. I used to use cash maybe 75% of the time as my card was so much more convienent. Ill rethink that from now on depending on what I am paying for I suppose.

Absolutely. That had already pretty much been the case before we even called.

Chris, do you have any idea were the card was compromised? Good news is the bank stopped it for you. My credit union has frozen my credit card three times because the “spending habits” did not match my profile. Each time we were traveling and I was able to fix it over the on the phone.

I try to never let my card out of my sight when I use it.

I couldn't live without credit cards.  But you have to be carefull.  My card company is 100% liable for unauthorized charges.  I have never had an issue in some 40 yrs of usage.

I make sure I receive my monthly statment and shread it after review. When using it online, be carefull that your on the correct web-site.  How else do I get a replacement mirror for my silverado delivered to my door at 60% of what the dealership wanted to charge me.  I also get 5% off on all gas purchases.  My wife and I each received two free airline trips to AK, just for signing up for a card and chargeing $500 in purchases.

Whenever we travel, we call the card company and tell them how long and where we are traveling.

Im not sure when. Could have been on one of her business trips to Chicago. Heck, it could have happened a year ago and the number was finally used by the thieves now. Perhaps they sit on those numbers they collect before they make an attempt at using it?dunno

I hear you Jim. I cant live without it either. Problem with me is that for years, I never kept cash around and would use my card ALL the time. No matter of it was a bottle of soda that costs a dollar at the gas station or to fill up my tank. Its usually my cash card that I use and have been substituting it for cash instead.

I used to think ordering parts online from places like Summit or Rock Auto was safer to do it over the phone but your giving an actual live person your credit card number instead of doing it electronicly so anything can happen.

That sucks Chris, glad it is handled.

For family purchses, we rarely use cash. For mysef, I rarely use a card since it's my way of keeping tabls on how much I spend. We each get an allowance which isn't much per week, but it keeps both of us from overspending and helps us save for all the trips we go on and spend more on the kid's stuff. Works for us, everyone has thier own way I'm sure. Bad thing for me i that everything for the car comes out of MY money and not OUR money. She makes up for it some with bigger tool purchases and stuff somtimes and I sneak in some stuff here or there too (like shop supplies).

You tell me what you want, I'm a GM dealer partsman. Remember, Northstar Chevelle paid members get a great deal on parts through me and I can ship quite cheaply too using Spee-Dee which is generally 1 day (maybe 2) in MN. I also can take a card over the phone (which I rip in half and then shred into 2 different garbage cans btw).

Didn't think about you, I ordered from GM Direct Parts.

Say I am looking for an odd, discontinued part,  like the differencial shims you found at a dealership in IA.  I wonder if there is a 5692597 out there.

Think they were on steering shafts of 65 and 66 Chevelles and Elcamino's that came from the factory with a BB and on some of the 442 and GS with non tilt columns in 65 and 66.  Part discontinued in 1974.  Any chance to find one out there?  Thanks, Jim

Bryan has saved me a LOT of coin over the last year with replacing both front wheel hubs on my K1500 and many parts for the HHR. I was able to buy an original rear bumper cover for less than a cheap aftermarket knock-off...thumbsup

I only use plastic for online purchases, and then only via electronic entry (never verbal). I'm a 99% "Cash" kinda guy....

- It's not my fault the cashier is an idiot, and can't make change... it's just too bad you had to wait an extra 30 seconds for your double shot/soymilk/french vanilla/espresso/latte....

- I want the anonymity of cash. I don't need my purchases to be "on the grid", or being tracked.

- I know instantly the money is gone, how much, and when. I don't have to reconsile a checking account (via a debit card against it).

- Cash is self-limiting. If it's not in my pocket, I can't spend it. If I need more I go to my bank's ATM and get more - NO 3rd parties.

- For major purchases we'll use plastic. Charge it, get the points, and pay it off the next statement.

If you use plastic you absolutely have to keep tabs on the account - almost daily! You don't have to do this with cash.

My neighbor has a credit card provider that texts and emails him every time his card is swiped then again with the charge. When he pumping gas he receives a text before he gets back in the car, when he shops at Cub he receives the text while he’s bagging his groceries.

Neat deal for the guy with a smart phone; I tried to get the service through my credit union but they don’t provide it yet.

Don't forget about the RF chip they are putting in cards. Someone can steal your info by just walking by you with a scanner. I had not heard of this technology but when I did I called my credit card company and requested new cards without the RF chip. They were happy to comply and I had new cards withing two days. I don't need to be able to walk by a scanner and wave my card to make a purchase although someone else might want to.

Just don't go to Europe without a chip card.  That's all they accept there as that's now their standard.  The U.S. will probably go to that in 5 years or so.

I know discontinued in 1974,  Thought maybe some dealership had it sitting in their inventory like those shims for a 66 rear axle you found for me in IA.

Thanks,
