I don't know if anyone has heard of it but for the past few years there has been an event in south Texas known as the Texas Mile.  It is currently held at the old Naval Air Station in Beeville, Texas.  There is an old 1.5 mile airstrip ued for three days as a race track.  Any vehicle can run the 1.0 mile course as long as they meet certain safety requirements.  Times are checked at the half and full mile.  We saw everything from a 67 Chevelle to a 69 Camaro to a stock Cadilac CTS to Corvettes and Mustangs to pro stock to motorcycles, you get the picture.   The best time was a modified TransAm that turned 200.4 in the half mile and 250.8 in the full mile.  The fastest motorcycle was clocked over 240 just short of the full mile when he crashed.  That was the only accident we saw other than one guy ran off the track at about 1/8 mile.  Great way to spend a sunny 86* day.

I didn't see anything on the news last night but I suspect the worse.

Ya these flying mile deals are cool. I don't have a cage so I've only been able to run the 1/2-mile...still fun (I hit 130 in the wagon with the old setup).

I did the one in Nebraska (Sandhills Open Road Challenge) and I got a ride in the passenger seat at the one they do at Silver State in Nevada (twin-turbo Viper). We were touching 200 mph when oil pressure went to 0...tough day for him.

The Nebraska deal is totally kick ass...they run a rally-style race the day after the 1/2-mile and 1-mile open road runs. If you're into driving fast, it's a blast...although the classes go as slow as 85 mph average, so anyone in this club could do it easily.

I ran it two years ago. It was a blast. One of those things you have to do/see at least once.  They had to change to a new location. Still in the same general area though.

Keep it under 190 and you don't need a cage. You'll get one free pass if you exceed your tech speed limit as you'll see near the end of this video. :D
