I saw something like that once in Hot Rod or Car Craft magazine. It was on a black car and the stripes started out white then went yellow and orange. It was so tastefully done. I came real close to doing it on my 70 but I couldn't find the article and really didn't want to do True Flames. I think it's cool.
I honestly feel our cars are too new for flames. They look great on some of the curvy cars of the 50s and earlier, but the crisp lines of later Chevelles just don't look right with them in my opinion.

That's the one! Thanks.

Personally, I think the stripe flames are ok if they are kept to the hood, but even then they better be perfectly done and styled.
I prefer this for flames:

I like the look but it cant be an all stock restoration. That just doesnt work. There has to at least be a set of aftermarket wheels of some kind or the flames just look out of place if its just stock.

While you guys were busy arguing about the glass of water. I drank it!
Tim-I forgot where I stole the pic from years ago, but those flames look a lot like Mike Lavalee's with all the layered colors and curls on the flames.

I never really looked at it that way before but the more I think about it. I totally agree. Maybe right up to the end of the late 50's tail fin era is about where I would stop. Although, I remember seeing a few custom vans that were all black with full flames that to this day, still look cool to me.

I like the way they continue through the stripe then the void then back onto the little stripe.
Thanks again. I have someone to show this too. Maybe for my next project.
Hey Brian can you still get the correct head bolts from GM for a 69 big block?
I show the 4.5" long one is # 3877668, the short is just over 2" and is #3877669. Longs have been discontinued, shorts are still available or Gilleland also shows 8.

Thanks Bryan. That helped. I was able to find some originals. I may be a little overboard on this but I am trying to get every part as correct as possible and as date matched to the car as possible where I can. I did not have any rally rims in my pile sorry about that and I don't mean to hijack this thread.. although I guess I did.
I do like those flames a lot but if you look to your left and peek at May on the calendar you will see what I will soon be driving on a daily basis and I can't wait!
