Have you ever had an old buddy say, take my car for a spin? Yet, you have reservations and do not want to risk putting a ding in his car. If an old trusted guy that you’ve been through some stuff with in years past, offers you that opportunity to take his car for a drive, what would you do?

Well it’s happened to me and I’m not sure what to do. Seems the car is very fast in a straight line. What would you do? Not take the car for a drive and just say thanks, or take it for a drive then say thanks for the ride?

He is going to send me some pixs of the car, I’ll post them when I get them.

Craig, I'd let you drive my Chevelle because I've never seen it do burnouts from outside the car, and I KNOW you couldn't resist since you'll try to do burnouts even on a skateboard!!!  laughing

An old buddy of mine in Chicago is BIG into the SCCA thing, and has a Porsche 924 (2.0L). It has been modified to the razor's edge of staying in the "street legal" class/level he competes in.
I probably hadn't seen him for 5+ years, but on our last trip through we stopped by. After the obligatory 5 minutes of insults (Hey, you've put on pounds... don't worry, you don't have any more hair to lose... etc) he tosses me the keys and says "Take Sheryl for a blast. Just wait until the oil temp comes up".

He had rain tires on it (3 grooves calling themselves tread) and current tabs/insurance... so we did. Ever drive a 250HP go-kart??

Drive the car.

I would take it out, be gentle with it and whe I was out of eyeshot but within earshot I would put it in park and rev it up some so he thinks I got on it. That's about it. Then act very impressed wether I was or not.

I was in a similar predicament a couple winters back in Las Vegas.

We were cruising the strip and stuff, then had to wait for another guy to show up and were parked right along a loading/unloading area of Fremont Street. We had to use the bathroom but were'nt going to leave the car alone, so I went first. When I got back, Rowdy tossed me the keys to his car and said I could move it if needed, especially if the cops came since it was in a no parking area. Boy was I tempted to ask to drive it, I'm sure he would have said yes.

For those who don't know the guy or car, Rowdy is a member of Team Chevelle and the unofficial Las Vegas ambassador for Chevelle guys and gals. His car has been on Pinks and Pass Time. He drives it harder than I think any of us drive ours, and proves it. I had flashes of crashes while riding with him.

I have made that offer to people on numerous occasions. When I make that offer, it's because I trust the person's judgement and ability to control the car.

Few ever accept, and I'm never offended by it when they don't... being afraid of wrecking it is why I trusted them in the first place.

Steve M has offered to let me drive his race car when we have been out at the track of few times. I keep saying no because honestly I think  it would probably scare the crap out of me. Driving a couple 11 second cars was more then satisfying for me.

I have offered to let some drive my car and you know if they are capable or not. So if someone asks you they know and trust you have enough common sense to know your limits. So if you really want to drive it to see what it is like I would say go for it.

I think only 1 other person has driven my Chevelle since I got it, maybe 2. Both are on this board. Like others, it's because I trust them and know that if something ever happened, they would man up and fix it or make it right. Same with the last car I had, same 2 people in fact.

Last time I had a hot car and someone other than me drove it, SHE blew the engine up......

I will admit to having driven 67SS's 67SS as well as others he has built, but you better believe I never thought about getting crazy.

 If you can drive a stick heck yes you can drive it.  It would be ok because I know, you know the correct way to go in the ditch.

Pushrod may need to explain; he did the demo in his black Burb for John D and me. I’m not sure how to describe exactly what I saw but, it most resembled a 270 degree reverse spin in slow motion as he descended backwards into the tall grass.

I still remember Frank offering me to take a run in his 37 down the strip at the Rock last spring when we went. Im not sure if he was serious or not but he says he was. I still chickened out. I dont think I could take someones offer of driving thier car either.

I normally pass on driving other people's cars too, but THAT, I would be all over in a heart beat. He would probably have to chase me down the road until it ran out of gas to get it back...I LOVE '37's and a fast one is just a bonus...hyper

It’s not going to be a drive in the country and there are some licensing requirements. It has 2500 horsepower and should turn 6.5seconds or better after final tuning 220-230 mph range. It has a powerglide so I won’t need to remember to shift and that’s good because I‘m not sure I could remember as I might be busy shi**g.

Ok, I’m not going to do a 6 second run but I am going to do a run or runs.

Not to mention a track that would let an un-licensed driver without a pilots health card drive it. That car would probably break 9 seconds without shifting. If you can get away with it, DO IT.

I love when other people drive my car. I just tell them to ease into the fun stuff- throttle or corners or whatever.

The car is capable and fun, and it's pretty easy to control if things are crept up on. I have a 'loop' near the house I take folks for rides on- it includes a nice freeway on ramp (a blast at more than 60 mph) and plenty of flat, straight country roads that can be driven over 100 (or 120) mph. Then, I ask if they want to drive. Some have- and they rarely push the car more than I do, but they probably go faster/harder than they have in any other car.

I've never had any complaints about the ride (or drive) not being fast or fun enough. I've heard plenty of cuss words...and that's a good thing.
