Changing jobs like I change Chevelles
Permalink

First of all, NO... I'm not selling my Chevelle!!!

I AM changing jobs after 7 months however.  I left Toro 7 months ago because of a lack of 'career advancement opportunities' (In other words hit the glass ceiling for some reason but they wouldn't tell me why ) and went back into the electronics manufacturing industry at a much smaller company in Minnetonka.  It was just too much of a change for me, so I kept my ear to the rail for a better long term position.

I gave my 1 week notice yesterday, and I start on April 18th with Ingersoll Rand.  I'll be working with their climate control solutions divisions (Trane, Thermo King, Hussman) based out of the Bloomington office (Thermo King division), so no relocation!

The reason I only gave 1 week is that IR is having a week long gathering for the Sourcing team in the office near Charlotte, NC.  I had to go there for 1 of the interviews, and man is that the heart of NASCAR (Can you say the movie Talledega Nights?).  I'm not a big NASCAR fan, but I will have to check out the NASCAR museum in Charlotte during some downtime.

This change looks good in so many ways that I'm extrememly excited about the future.  I was blessed with 2 job offers at the same time and picked this one.  With the economic times being what they are, I felt honored to have 2 opportunities to choose from.  My career has been leading to this point, and it feels great being recognized for my future potential.  Can't wait to get started!

And... a HUGE side benefit is that my commute will be back to what it used to be (half what it is now in time and mileage) which is great for my gas guzzling truck!  I also know someone at the TK location that lives close to me, so some carpooling is in the future.

My wife's job was recently eliminated (medical transcription that went to voice recognition software... darn technology!) but she applied for and got a position with the same company as a surgery scheduler.  And... the position is closer to home too!

Somebody upstairs is really looking out for us right now!  floating.gif

Guess I better go to church soon!  Lol

Thanks for listening.  Had to tell someone besides the wife, kids, and cats...

Congrats and, yes, I'm a little jealous. With the economy in the gutter for construction I can't find a decent job and you have offers falling from the sky......guess I should've gone to college after HS...

I wish I could find something with a shorter commute. An hour each way is starting to wear on me some.

But congrats on the new position.

Chris, that's about a 'normal' commute for me each way now.  You can do it, but it does get old.  I talked to someone this a.m. that has been doing an hour commute each way for over 20 years!

It's hard to adjust to when it was only 25-30 min. before!  I'm looking forward to being on the 'right' side of 35W and staying off 494 completely!

Thanks Mitch.  They weren't exactly falling from the sky, but both did happen at the same time.

After high school I didn't want to go to 4 years of college so I went to a tech school and got my associates degree in electronics (it was the 80's after all...) and started working right out of college.

In order to move up in the organizations, I had to have a 4 year degree.  So at the young age of 37 I started attending a non-traditional expedited evening college program (6 p.m.-10:30 p.m. for 8 weeks...) and got my bachelor's degree.  It was tough with small children and my wife working full time, but one of the best accomplishments in my life.

Without doing that, I wouldn't be where I am today (whatever that means ).  I guess that's what I mean by saying my career has been leading to this new opportunity.

Congratulations Stan! It's nice to options the way the economy is.

If you get some free time in Charlotte, check out some race shops too. When we went to the Bristol race the hall of fame wasn't open yet, but we drove over to Richard Childress, Tony Stewart Racing and Michael Waltrip racing. I recommend Michael Waltrip racing, they give you a tour through all the areas of the shop, get to see pit road practice, if they're doing it, and have an open air catwalk over the main floor where they are preparing all the cars. At Childress and Stewart you can only look through a window at the current shops.

Cool! You're gaining an hour of every day now, so now you can do more Chevelle projects.

Thanks Steve, I'll have to check out Waltrip's.

On a side note, the driveshaft I got from you is going to work fine with the 200-4R!   I mocked it up last night and it's perfect.  I removed the u-joints, painted it up, and will put new u-joints in this weekend so I can slip it in place!  Thanks for your help!

Congrats Stan. Are you commuting in the GMC still? You could also pick up a cheap econo car that wont gouge you so bad on gas and keep the miles off the pickup as well.

Now we got the hook up for air compressors, impact wrenches, etc.

Yep, still driving the GMC but my gas bill will be cut in half!  I thought about finding a little car, but I can put in $3000 worth of gas in the truck, but not get much of a car for that kind of money.

Anyhow, I have someone nearby that works at Thermo King so I will be looking them up to carpool.

And yes, I need to find out what kind of IR tool perks I get as an employee!!!

Stan, my wife would not let me get a cheap car to run to and from work until my sister gave me one she had sitting and wanted gone. After putting about 30,000 on that and the wife needing to use my truck while her car was down she relented on keeping beaters. My Olds I drive now was a repairable with 18,000 miles for $1800 and by the time I was done $3000 with paint and new tires. It gets real easy to justify the costs to the wife when you look at replacement costs of trucks and fuel costs on a weekly basis. The extra little bonus is the insurance on the 3rd car is cheap the truck is minimal now and the wear and tear costs on a car is far less then the truck.

Congratulations! I hear you on the job change and being kinda lost (I did my time learing the asian car language) and having the long commute. I hope this works out as well for you as it has for me.

Today's my last official day at my current employer!

I have a 3 hour off site supplier assessment meeting, then taking my team to lunch as a going away present, exit interview at 2 o'clock, then I'm outta here!

Should be home in time to drive the Chevelle over to Master Trans for a check up since at least the roads will be dry.

Day 1 went well and I'm glad I made the change!

Lot's to absorb and catching up to do, but it looks like this will be lots of fun.  My boss is here for 2 days and we spent most of today just making introductions.

And the side benefit of a 25 min. commute home in the middle of rush hour was great!
