Picking a paint color
Permalink

My new 72 Chevelle is Silver. My old one is Mulsanne Blue. Both are stock original colors. I am going to have my new one painted. I could go with the original color to make it easy. I could paint it the same as my old Chevelle as I love the color but want this new one to be different. I have a connection to get PPG paint at cost. I want to find a color that is easy to replicate so I lean towards a factory color.

I am thinking of a metallic blue. Not quite an old school metal flake blue but kind of a silver blue if there is such a thing?

Anybody game to do some work for me in a little rust repair and a paint job? Just say yes and what you think you would need for cash. I have a couple leads but I lean towards one of us with a unique love of Chevelles!

I might be lazy and repaint in the original color as it will look nice and will be much easier. Hmmm...maybe some nice deep blue flames???

IMO I'd stay silver for a few reasons:

Economy:
It would make your repaint job 50% easier - no jambs etc.
You could re-do the car in a blue-tint/hue silver, and it really wouldn't matter much, the jambs and inside the hood/trunk would still be silver.

Unusual:
It seems everywhere you turn there's a blue (or red) Chevelle (sorry guys with those colors, but it's true... aww).

THANK YOU JOHN! This is exactly what I was thinking:

just looking for more information about this color/scheme to help me find and pick one out.

I haven't found a "stock" color like that, but you could get a custom mix for the same price as a standard color. Mix in a little metallic and you would have a nice color that isn't on other cars either.

For a vintage blue, Astro or Mulsanne is always an eye catcher and again, you could have some metallic or pearl mixed in to have a unique shade.

Here's a color you might like. It's a very light blue with slight metallic. Stock 67 Pontiac Montreaux Blue...
Blue 67 GTO

Oh, this is sweet ... thank you guys. I do like the Mulsanne Blue but it is the same color as my old Chevelle and I do want the new one to be different from it. Hmmm...I do like that Pontiac color and so far is my favorite and would be perfect for my goal.

Another tip(s) is just keep your eyes open on the road - see a color you like and make a mental note of the make & model...
OR
Do a cruise of the dealers over on 394. See a color you like?... jot it down.

21 - Crystal Blue Metallic is nice but I think 25 - Meditarranean Blue is nicer but may not be enough silver.

Look at 90 - Cad. Ice Blue Firemist?

I'll add to the dealer walk idea.

If you find a color you like on a GM car as long as it's after 1990, grab the VIN off it. I can translate that VIN and get the exact paint code (option code and WA number which is the mix number body shops use). Often on GM vehicles there was slight changes year to year on colors and the names they give those colors are sometimes not a good representation of the actual color-they get too creative.

I like silver... looks really good with some black accents (SS or Heavy Chevy stripes? HC stripes on a 4-door would be cool, and I've never seen it done!)

What color is the interior?

Why not just 2 tone the car with silver top and blue sides? Another option is just do a factory "style" stripe in a blue you like to like Derek suggested. IMHO it looks better when it appears as though it came from the factory that way and is not a forced issue or look. Just a clean subtle look to the car inside and out.

Wow, that Ice Blue is kinda nice. I do think I like the stock look better in a paint. I did see a 70 4-door with the stripes and it did look good!

Paint color selection is really hard. It took me forever and I waited to the last second to pick mine, 1969 limelight green/frost green.

Lots of guys like that Marina blue shade, but I think that color is way over used. I think you see it even more often then red on GM muscle cars.

No doubt about it if I had an original silver car it would stay silver. To save all the jam work it would be a no brainer. With paint and rust repair.... figure out what you think it will take/cost and double it. Cortez silver is popular, but looks good on almost anything... plus you can make it a bit more unique with black stripes, a blue pinstrip, etc.

SO many nice silvers out there today. Look at Mercedes, Audi, etc.. Several different takes on the perfect silver.

Maybe a silver tinted w/ blue instead of a blue tinted w/ silver?

the 2-tone style is headed out of fashion...at least on the West Coast. That means it'll be 6 years before it hits here...LOL~

To get the desired effect I agree the silver tinted with blue would be best. I just haven't figured out how to do that yet. With a black interior would it look bad to have blue flames on a silver car???

Black fading into lighter blues with silver tips, outline in reverse color order for a striking look.

I personally would avoid flames... they can look really good on some cars, and with the shape/size/fading all done perfectly, but if not done just right, they can look really really bad.

I've done some flames (lots of little stuff, and one car - my brother's '60 Impala) and it's pretty challenging to get them right. It's also an all-day process to lay them out, and painters aren't cheap to hire for a whole day.

Ok Darren, option B.

Get the car painted 1 solid color of your choice have all the bodywork done at the same time.

Then design a wrap for your car and get flames or whatever you want done on the wrap. If in 2 years you decide you want another design done peel the wrap off and have another wrap designed to your taste.
I think the Black convert with the cool graphics was done in a wrap or I may be mistaken. Can anyone verify paint or wrap on that car?

I think that is the way I am going to go Dave, once again the voice of reason. The paint code is 14 which lists 4 different colors, so which one is it? It does look more pewter than silver but I prefer a nice clean silver plus I am going to put the wheel well and rocker panel moulding back on.

Maybe pinstripes will go on after I get her together and on the road. What is a wrap?

What the big time Pro's use. on race cars and such. If you see the cars that are one huge billboard, or the MTC bus that advertises for Blah Blah institute, that is a wrap. Prices range from $300 for side wraps to $2000 for ultra elaborate full body wraps.

Still not settled on a color but I think I am going to skip the chrome wheel well and rocker mouldings. I prefer a nice clean simple look and there will be less places for water to sit.

There ya go, a month after I buy my new car another good one shows up. Unfortunately for them, the market will not bear their asking price for a 4-door. If I was still looking I might offer them $5000 for their $8500 car even it was in great shape.

Yea, I think that silver looks fine and the chrome mouldings really add a nice touch. I was going to not install them but now I may put the chrome wheel well and rocker panel mouldings on. Thsi is only getting harder and harder to decide?!?!?!?!?

Does that green vert have gray paint in the trunk???

Yes it is grey, that is what was in it. I found some info that said depending on where and when the cars were made the color in the trunk could be either the grey or darker with aqua. There was alot of conflicting info on this. I think I found the info on Team Chevelle's site.

I used GM splatter paint from NPD.

The stuff from Eastwood works well too.

But as others said top coat it with the clear or the first time water gets on it it will run no matter how long it has been on and water can get through it to the metal below.

I always paint the trunk and wheel wells first with a rust inhibitor primer and top coat that is close to the color I am going to splatter the trunk with.

I think the wheel and rocker moldings pull the sides together better. Scott's car is rather custom and it looks OK to me without any trim, but I've never followed the California look of shaving everything. You either like it or you don't...wink

Hi guys - Happy new year!
Picking the color for Vert was easy for me original Gulf Green. Looking through the magazines and any pictures of shows such as Car Craft, I haven't seen a green Vert anywhere plus I wanted to go back to stock. Vert commands attention and turns heads!

The '72 silver is nice, Tim was surprised that Gulf Green stock color had a slight metal flake in it, possible the silver does too. Paint is costly - be sure to paint what you really like you can always apply the wrap (weiner or otherwise) as money permits.

By the way doesn't Vert look great? He is done except for a couple of minor adjustments and getting him moved from Tim's workshop to my mother in laws garage! I can't wait to drive him this spring!

Cindy

PS You will NEVER find Vert on Craigs list or anywhere else for sale! You will see me driving him until I can't anymore - imagine this - a 90 year old blonde with the top down music turned way up flipping other drivers off! biggrin

Hey Cindy, that looks really nice now. Tim must have pulled out all the stops and you got the "Super Buff and Shine Special"!

That engine compartment looks great now and he must have worked that little kid to death on your car. Did the same to my kids as well and that kid will remember it for years to come.

I see that Cindy's car has all the chrome I was talking about plus the door bumpers I have another thread on. My passenger side, front fender one is missing the black rubber piece, is there any way to find these pieces anywhere?

Put a "wanted" ad on Team Chevelle and watch ebay. There are probably thousands around but not in demand so not advertised.
