I don’t know much about why or how to do this. Add comments if you have experienced with this., from what I’ve read, you modify the two weights (decrease)and springs (lighten) if you want to increase (move up) the shift points because the trans shifts two early. The 2004r bought was out of a Caprice and if you have changed to a higher gear ratio or reduced the diameter of the tire the trans will shift two early. I don’t know if anything in the governor has been changed or not.. original use for a 86 Caprice, but governor may or may not have been changed. I am experience late shift points. Maybe if things have been changed, I could add heavier weights or stronger springs to decrease shift points. I have been working with adjustment of the TV Cable, just one more think to try with that. There is a pretty good online video showing the weight and spring with different governors.
What are the axle rations of your Chevelle and the Caprice?
No idea of what the axel ratio that the 86 Caprice came with. There is a tag on the trans that identifies what the trans came in, maybe it also identify the axel ratio.
the axel ratio of the chevelle is 3:55; tire diameter is 26.5” . I don’t want to change gears or tire size. I would think the caprice would have a larger diameter tire and a lower gears, like 3.36 or so, both would move shift points higher.
I would bet John was in that governor and knows what it is from the rebuild. I would ask him for advise and how to proceed. That trans is not stock, as it came from the Caprice.
I hate to bug him too much. But I should at least reach out. The pull on the cable along with the pressure build is the only thing that makes sense to me. Once I get into L2 driving around in town from 20 to around 45 mph Is fine. Once I get into D which doesn’t occur until 56 mph is fine from 30 to 60 . Then I have to get up to around 80 mph before it shifts into O. Then it is fine from about 55 mph and up.
