Hire college kids. Those gutter helmets only promote ice dams in the winter.

Not many kids want to work around here, just barrow money and then  wine about debt.  And their mostly afraid of going up 23" plus.  I hear you about the ice dams, not one hear in 45+ years and don't want one.  Maybe continue to hire the old 60 years young  guy who can't seem to give up painting old houses and climbing ladders.

Jim I had a type of gutter helmet installed on both the house and attached garage. There about the same height. I don’t have ice dams but I do get icicles that drip on sunny days. I need the leave protection, all my gutters drain into a underground drain field that runs to the river. I’m also past climbing a 25 foot ladder to remove leaves and I can’t find anyone dumb enough to do it for me.

Jim, I don't think any gutter cover will affect whether you have an ice dam or not. Ice dams are caused by warm air leaking out of the house, warming the roof and melting the snow which then refreezes into an ice dam. If you have a well insulated roof you should not have an ice dam.
