Tech Session Saturday, June 8th at 10 AM, Minneapolis

Hey all. See below for details on next month's Tech Session (for my car).

Saturday, June 8th at 10 AM

Andrew Kraling's house

319 Vincent Ave N

Minneapolis, MN 55405

Main goal of the Tech Session is to trouble-shoot the ignition system and get the car running.

I suspect I burned out the coil when I was attempting to start the car after the fan/radiator fiasco last summer.

I have a pertronics ignition system (yes, I hear all of your MDI suggestions) along with a thrameflower coil. More info to come on those specifics.

Tooling in my shop for electrical consists of simple diagnostic and assembly (multimeter, single-probe circuit testers, soldering iron, crimper, stripper, cutter). I have a decent amount of electrical connectors, wire, etc.

However, there are various smaller projects if members want to split up (not in any specific order);

Dial-in linkage/carburetor/throttle body once ignition issue has been resolved

Install Radiator overflow tank/canister

Connect wiring/vacuum lines for cowl induction

Diagnose the wiring for the wiper blades/adjust blade arm position

Diagnose the volt meter (newly installed, but reading around 18)

Install neutral safety switch

There is some lower trim that can be reinstalled

Diagnose and eliminate the very annoying squeak

Install/fix chrome strip on front grill

Install passenger seat belt

Install new shifter handle

New bolt for the review mirror

Repair small vinyl tear in juke shelf

Few notes;

There is plenty of on-street parking in front of my house and the session will be held rain or shine.

I don't have a large workshop, but my garage is actually a carriage house with room for 2-3 separate work spaces.

Tools are limited to mainly hand tools. My large air compressor is not currently working (thanks harbor freight), but I might pick up a smaller one in the meantime.

There is outdoor seating for 12 and I"ll have additional tables and lawn chairs. We can spread out inside the house and carriage house to eat if it rains.

Food will be plenty; I'll have some pulled pork and beef for sandwiches and the club will provide water and beverages. Club will provide chips.

If you want to bring appetizers and of course, deserts, that will always be appreciated.

Theodore Wirth Parkway is very close to my house and might be an option for a few members to cruise down around Cedar and Calhoun Lakes.

More details to come. Thanks.

If someone has a 3/8 drill with an angled head, preferably a 90 degree angle, please bring it. Need to drill a couple of hole in the pedal mounting plate.

A few updates;

Watching the weather and looking ok for rain as of now. I don't have A/C in the garage, but will have in the house if anyone needs to cool off.
Kids and significant others are more than welcome.
Come and go as you are able and no obligation to turn any wrenches.

Can someone bring a small air compressor?

Hank and I discussed food - see posting above.

Parts - I have the diagnostic diagrams from Pertronix for the Ignitor I and Flamethrower coil to trouble-shoot my existing setup.

Summit is delivering a plug and play Ignitor III and flamethrower III system - complete with distributor.

I have a majority of the other parts and will be posting a few more needs as I can't locate random screws / hardware for;

Driver side mirror (two interior screws for mirror position bracket) - I have one, but need one more. I'll post images in the next day or so.
Mounting hardware for the chrome strip on the lower body below the passenger and driver doors
I need a single piece of chrome stripping over the driver door
Screws to mount kick panels

I won't be able to make this one. I was looking forward to seeing your house and carriage house. I have a HEI distributor if your new one does not arrive. If someone would like to pick it up.

Below are images of the hardware/trim pieces I need. I realize some of these are available in an entire kit, but I only need one/few pieces of each so hopefully someone has a spare. I also looked at AMKproducts and could not located the hardware for the body trim.

Driver side mirror (two interior screws for mirror position bracket) - I have one, but need one more. I'll post images in the next day or so.
Mounting hardware for the chrome strip on the lower body below the passenger and driver doors
I need a single piece of chrome stripping over the driver door

Yesterday I realized the ignitor system states to not use solid core spark plug wires. I'm wondering if that is part of my issue. I'll look further into my MSD wires and call Pertronix if needed.

Before images of throttle linkage and cowl induction.

More than likely I'm missing a few parts for the cowl induction.

Hank, I have an angle drill so I will bring it along.

Andrew, I have misc screws of various sizes I will bring along. They will not be GM hardware but maybe we can get some things hung on the car.thumbsup

I believe I’m bringing a dessert of some kind, Jenny was in the rhubarb patch this morning.

Does anyone know where I can get the clip for the back of the driver mirror adjustments outside of buying a complete replacement?

A big thanks to everyone that came over yesterday to help me diagnose the timing issue with my car.

A special thanks to those of you that brought the timing gun, air compressor, a 90-degree drill along with all of your other tools and especially your knowledge. Appreciate your patience with my battery issue.

It's amazing to see the progress on this car over the last year and a half. I learn so much at every tech session and at every Club event. Without this club I would be in the same position as I was a year-and-a-half ago.

I took the car out last night twice and again twice today with the family. It fires up right away and drives well. It's nice to have a seat belt for the wife! I'll have to diagnose that annoying little squeak 🐁.

I look forward to seeing you all the next event.

Sorry I couldn't make it.  Too many house projects this weekend I've neglected when working on the Malibu...

Glad to see the club spirit alive and well with everyone pitching in, and Andrew you have joined the group that has moved their car along to the next stage, and I'm sure at some point you will be the one providing help to another member!  It's part of the club 'thing'. thumbsup

I never thought it would be the distributor/ timing out of sinc.

A new set of plugs were required... I should have checked those beforehand.

Many thanks for the carb help.

Quick update on my Chevelle. I've started it at least 30 times. It has been running really well. Had to slightly increase the throttle position.

I dropped in a new battery and reassembled the door panel working on some other small projects.

I was able to take my niece, nephew and daughter to back to the 50s and on many fun cruises with the wife.

it's such a blast to have that car running again

thanks again for everyone's help and certainly looking forward to paying it back/forward.
