(I still get the "oogies" when I see an engine being lifted by a carb-plate rig!)

 Me too, I will never trust 4, 1/4" grade 5 bolts to hold that kind of weight, especially in an aluminum intake. I've seen those threads get stripped out by over tightening the nut !!!

Used the lift plate many times, no issues so far.  I guess I've been lucky.   whew 

Although, now that I think about it, for BBC's I used chains.

I have never used a lifter plate. I have two "Y" shaped chains that go to my engine leveler on the cherry picker. I bolt the chains either on the corners of the heads or exhaust manifold bolts. That is very stable, and adjustable.
