Changing out the seat upholstery in the '62 Impala. Quite the fight to get it pulled to the back of the frame to hog ring down. I had to let it sit in the sun for 1/2 hour to get hot and stretch, but it looks pretty good. I couldn't get the piping perfectly straight, but maybe it will shrink some now and tighten up.
Got the backrest recovered today...need to repaint the speaker surround now.
Started on the buckets, but Hubbard's cushion springs do NOT match my originals, nor do they fit the frame, even though they insist they will. I have 1 new spring from a couple years ago and found what brand it is and ordered another to be here next Tuesday. Gonna cut it close for BTTF, again...
Since I only have 1 correct spring, I tore the driver seat down to use it on there, so at least I could drive it. Newer upholstery, but everything under it is original and nasty. I cleaned the frame in the blast cabinet and shot a coat of rust converter and semi-gloss black paint before installing the spring and foam.
Ready to start hog ringin', but it got to be 8:30 and I've been dealing with this project since 9am....there's tomorrow.
When I did my front seats, the foam I bought was so thick, sat too high, felt like I was riding on a beach ball. It felt very unstably. So I pulled them apart and cut the center foam down, than reassembled. There very good now.
This turned into a week long nightmare. Nothing about the bucket seat covers wanted to fit right. I am on a couple forums for these era cars and a guy posted pics of original '62-64 seat frames and mine appear to be '65 frames and they are just different enough to cause a lot of fitment issues. I did get them covered for now, but am most likely buying correct bucket seats from a guy in Iowa. He is coming to BTTF and will bring them with. Good thing the trunks on these cars are almost the size of a shed...
Pics of them installed, for now...no way to get the wrinkles out until they are on the right frames.
