Ice Storm out west of here...

Don't know if it made the news here, but I had the joy of driving to Aberdeen SD late Monday afternoon. Just about when I crossed the border things got "interesting".

For those that don't know the geography of SD's eastern edge, there is NOTHING TO THE HORIZON that will block wind/snow/ice. Lotsa fun driving a cinder-block with a ladder rack! cuckoo

I was on Cty12 west from I-29 for 70 miles... took 3 hours. It was like driving through a cottonball. The road was glare-ice, snow was horizontal/sideways out of the north, and the constant wind was 30mph/gusts to 45. I had two to three inches of "right rudder" cranked in the entire time - and I changed lanes about 12 times without touching anything during freak gusts hitsfan - major pucker factor here! whew  At best 30mph.

(You know the thing your mom told you... "Always wear clean underwear in case of an accident!"... had a problem maintaining that on Monday!)

Ok, this is totally irresponsible, and wrong to do, but I HAD to grab a video of the power lines along this route. This was before the  hitsfanand it was still light out. The wires looked to be about 2" in dia., and they were twirling like a "double-dutch" jump rope! Another 45mins and it was BLACK dark, and the snow/ice hit.

Ice is easy to deal with when driving, but ice + wind is a bad combination...

Wonder why they don't have the "wings" I see on lines around here to hold them from bouncing ??
