I am going to change the water pump in the '38 to see if I can get the coolant temp down. It's been suggested that I may have a reverse flow pump from a serp set up now. After looking at parts on-line, I'm not certain what I need ... Some describe the rotation as "standard" while others are counter or clockwise. If the rotation is viewed from the back of the motor as are all other parts on a car, I assume I need counter. If viewed from the front it would be clockwise...
Any help with determining rotation direction ?
Yes, I will be replacing the thermostat at the same time and possibly the cap as well. I have read the cap should hold 15#. I believe mine is rated for that but I will test it to see.

My first thought is to get it off and do what Steve said and get the casting number off and see where it came from. Then I would recommend a Stewart high flow stage 2 or 3 pump. They are a little more expensive but make a nice product. Couldnt hurt to take a garden hose and run it through both the WP's inlet and outlet on the front of the block in both directions and flush that out too. It didnt look like you had a serpentine setup so you need the standard rotation.
