Looking for some computer wifi help...

I am renting a house that came with a cable modem and router.  the owner gave me the security code for the router.  When I tried to log in It recognized his system but let me in without using the security code and as such is an unsecure network which makes me uncomfortable.  I brought my own router and substituted mine for his.  This also let me in without a security code and my laptop recognized his router although it wasn't in use anymore.  What is even stranger is that I disconnected both routers and the only thing that is connected to the cable is the modem.  I can still login through wifi.  The modem is a D-Link dcm-202, could it have a built in router in the modem? Don't I need the router to gain access for wifi?  I want to have a secure system, what am I doing wrong or what do I need to do to accomplish a secure wifi system? banghead

When I tried to log in It recognized his system but let me in without using the security code and as such is an unsecure network which makes me uncomfortable. He probably has a "guest" account setup on the router, and keeps the secure section to himself. brought my own router and substituted mine for his.  This also let me in without a security code Your pc probably has the info for "its" router in memory, and doesn't know it is in a different location and my laptop recognized his router although it wasn't in use anymore. Is his routier still in the circuit? (did you just plug a jumper cable between his router and yours?) If so, his is still on the network.   What is even stranger is that I disconnected both routers and the only thing that is connected to the cable is the modem.  I can still login through wifi. In this instance you are probably piggybacking on someone else's service/router in the neighborhood, or possibly a neighborhood public access service.  The modem is a D-Link dcm-202, could it have a built in router in the modem? I looked a the manual for this, and it is solely a converter box to strip Internet & TV off the cable. Don't I need the router to gain access for wifi? Yes, the router is Tx'r for WIFI.

Depending on which version of Windows, down on the status bar (lower right) you'll see a "bars" display of signal strength, etc. Click or hover on this and it should give you a prompt for "Wireless connections are available", and you should see his, yours, and whoever else you can pick up. Choose yours, and set it as the default. Then you should only hook up to your (secured) router.

Hope this helps.

Are you sure you're not logging in to one of your neighbors WiFi?

I am not sure what is going on. The homeowner gave me his login and security information which I was using. Like I said even disconnecting his router I could get in to what he said was his system. I have disconnected his router and plugged mine in

I left my router plugged in for awhile and now it is recognized. I have used my laptop and iphone before with this router so they recognized the router right away and no security info needed.

Bonnie has a new iphone and it will not recognize the router although it does see it. I can't get it t ask for the security password, any ideas???

-32, Holy Chit!

Don't miss it at all, although folks here think we brought it with us. We've already had more snow than this area normally gets in two years; tonight we'll see twenty below with 30 mph winds.

I have always admired Minnesotan's though, Ice, snow, forty below and life goes on as normal. We complain about it but things there never miss a beat. Here when the temps reached subzero everything stopped, schools and business’s close.

I still enjoy getting behind the snow blower and clearing the snow. It’s easier to do when you can do it at your leisure and not have to do it at O dark thirty because you need to get to work.

I think I would buy a new car!!!

Woke up to 29* this morning but 63* at lunch time.  Have to go out and clean up the Harley, taking a ride with friends to tombstone on Wednesday.

Stay warm!

Sounds kinda like Carson City NV, or the high-desert... my aunt & uncle moved there to get out of the "extremes", but still wanted 4 seasons (die-hard midwesterners). It'd snow overnight, but by noon it'd be 60.

If/when I finally move out of this state, I won't need to EVER see snow or negative temps again...tsktsk

Jon, have fun down there and send some warmth this way.

Kevin, the schools closed today and tomorrow because of the cold. This state has gone wimpy too. I remember going to school in -35°. The temps are all the rage on national TV. Again, this is normal and the mild winters we got used to are not. I just don't understand what all the hoopla is about...rolleyes

That was actually Jan 2009.  Low that day was -34 measured in Lakeville.  I took that pic in Lonsdale on the way to work that morning.  It was very odd because Minneapolis, Rochester, Duluth were all  ~10 degrees warmer.   As I approached I35, the temp steadily climbed to -24.  When I exited at CR70 to continue on to Farmington, the temp steadily dropped back to -35 (on the truck display).  I didn't believe it so when I got to work I checked the reporting station at the little airfield in Lakeville and sure enough, it said -34.

Large temp swings! Possibly elevation changes, the cold air will settle in low areas. I’ve seen 10 degree temp drops when driving south on 52 in cold weather between the top of a hill and the bottom. Tower and Embarrass MN reach their record lows because they are at a lower elevation than the surrounding area.

It is now colder here in Ohio than it is in the Cities, record cold stuff going on everywhere.
