70-72 Heater and AC box-engine side of firewall
Permalink

On the 70-72, are the heater core tubes that come out of the firewall moved for the AC cars vs the heat-only cars? I'm looking to remove the AC firewall stuff (engine side) from my car. I thought learned that the heater cores came out in different places, if that's true then I can't use a regular heater/blower motor case. I want to keep the heater so I can't just use one of the block off plates that's totally flat.

We should be able to fabricate an adaptor plate to mount the standard heater on the firewall while blocking the A/C opening. My GTO is sitting here with a bare firewall and the heater box is on the shelf for reference. Once you pull your A/C system off, you can get a dimension for the overall size of the plate.

I just remembered I have a '70-72 A/C box sitting on another shelf. I could trace that on a sheet of steel and cut to size and drill for original mounting studs and standard heater box.

thanks guys. I think I prefer the molded box, only for the factory look. I did think of making something along the lines of what you're describing Mitch, but I think it will look a little too out of place for what I have in mind.

A flat plate wouldn't work, because there's no "duct" for the fan to blow air through the heater core.

Yup, that's what I want to stay away from. I had thought about folding up a simple \__/ tunnel and mating it to a blower motor base, but in the end it will take way more than I want to do to make it look nice.

The link I posted says they are plastic or fiberglass depending on application, but it doesn't say which the Chevelle one is made from.  It would allow you to keep your heater.
