I put a set of those in my K1500 running lights and they are weak. They come with more/less leds and the more you can get, the better. You also want clear, not red for tail lights.

This is where I got mine and these look to be a good set for our tail lights. Select Cool White for color and 18° for our small lense area. If you decide to order them, get 4 and I'll split the shipping with you.

I have no idea of what amount of light goes out the end and if it would be any better than the old 1157.  Anyone have any experience with this.

Looks like shipping is only $5.95 if under 13oz with priority mail.  Another guy on TC suggest this.

I'm also interested in some kind of LED tail lights but don't know much about them.

"I put a set of those in my K1500 running lights and they are weak." Mitch, are you saying the LED bulbs from SuperBrightLEDs are weak or the ones from the eBay site?

Also, are these "plug 'n' run" or do they require something like the "tail light load resistor kit" or the "red LED bulb electronic flasher" shown near the bottom of the page?

There is a guy that sets up in the grandstand every year at back to the 50's that does LED tail lights for all the street rod models, tri-fives, tons of muscle car era cars, VW Beetle, and has almost every year Chevelle available accept the 66 and maybe another year or so (71-72 I think). I asked him last year why no 66 available. He said he hadnt got to that model yet but had more requests for 66 then anything last year so he planned to have it done for this year. Im kind of holding out for one of his kits as the priced seemed pretty good and the other kits come with a lens he has custom made for the lights, his claim was he wanted them to be 100% DOT legal and appearently spent the money and time to make that happen. All I know is the other models do look like a very nice. We shall see in a few weeks if he has them at the show or not.

I usually try to bet to the BTT50s on Friday unless the weather is kind of lousy that day. I should try to make a point of going into the grandstand to look at his stuff. Do the new lens look like the stock lens or are they a "smooth" red plastic (or glass)?

Word of warning, be wary of the overall diameter of the LED array - especially with a '66. The housing is barely tall enough for an 1157, and some of the LED replacement bulbs are larger.

I have that style of side leds as drls and they aren't as bright as a standard bulb. I got the "middle of the road" one too with not enough leds on it. They will last much longer but I'm not impressed with the brightness. The one I linked to has most of the leds pointed at the lense and should be bright.

I will look for a guy at BTTF too for the '66. If Jim orders these, I will try them and if they don't fit I have a "few" other cars I can use them in....cool

I guess we will find out when they come out, if he got them out this year. I want to say the other models had a smooth look to them but there wasnt the stock one present with the guy to compare it too. Some models he has I know had a smooth look to them for a more trick look then stock, like the set he has for 55 Chevy's, looked pretty cool actually. I like that look personally so I hope he was able to get them done for the 66.

I let this ride a bit, and now will really "chime in" with my 2cents...

LED bulbs are a compromise. To get the best performance you need to go with a model-specific, designed board with an LED array on it. Back in the day when I had "ekLED" running I built just this. It fit behind the stock lens (minus diffuser) and blew away the performance of an 1157 (see attached). They were so good I believe that manufacturers that shall remain nameless copied my design tsktsk.
