Horn issues with the horn rim on the steering wheel, contact only happen when I push of the left side.

I think the system used for the horn on the steering wheel is somewhat the same on 64-67 chevelles.  When I push of the left side of the horn ring the horn works.  When I push on the bottom or right side, it doesn't work.

I have taken apart and cleaned.  If I just hold that thin washer that makes contact with the power and slide it up/down/ left or right to make contact with the steering column shaft, the horn works all the time.

Someway or another, when I install the ring and push, it only works when I push on the left side.  I don't think that thin washer makes contact with the steering shaft,  when pushing on the right side or down.  I wonder if the washer or nut that I am using is not the correct OD and if the correct washer/nut would make it work.  GM 415919 washer and nut 114496. Washer was missing and the one I installed is about 0.040 smaller.  Worked the same way without the washer.  And maybe thats not the correct win washer that contact the power; but I think it is because it is a special designed washer.

Anyone have issues like this or any suggestions.  Thanks.

So what's wrong with just pushing on the left side?  50393?AWSAccessKeyId=1XXJBWHKN0QBQS6TGPG2&Expires=1373760000&Signature=V%2B3tuAB%2FcL0GFRmDY3x6Zq2P%2B0M%3D

I know the horn contact is still available (Belzer's in Lakeville shows one ) #474102 (list price is 5.42) if you still need one, can't find a good listing for the washer, unless they're considered the same.

Been using my left hand to Honk for the last 55 yrs.  I think in an emergency situation, I will revert to the left  hand.

Washer number is gm 415919.  AMK reproduces them; but only sell 10 and then shipping, etc.  It is 17/32 ID and 7/8 OD and 3/32 thick.  I can't find any thing like it in Lake City.

I not sure what you mean by the horn contact.  It would be that little thing that pops out of the steering column or the big flat thin washer that is insulated from the horn ring with a large round nylon spacer, and is insulated from the steering wheel by a spring by the plastic of the steeing wheel.  When you depress the horn the large thin washer slids  up, down, left, or right and the inside diameter of it makes contact with the steering column post.  I will look up that number online and maybe I'll get some information.

Thanks.

I had my steering wheel off yesterday to "tweak" my signal switch.

I did notice that the thin (maybe .025) washer/disc (with the 4 holes and ears/tabs to hold the plastic washer) had a "cone" to it - not flat. If you pressed it on the bench it would "oil can"... an old term might be a Belleville spring? If I understand the mechanics of the horn ring, this springy washer is what returns & holds the horn ring itself to a neutral position, and when deflected by the horn ring "snaps over-center" to make contact with ground/neg of the steering column.

Does yours have any "snap" left to it??

sounds like what I have, except there are only three holes for that funny looking think that helps isolated the 3 screws that mount the horn ring to the steering wheel.  Yes the washer has a little cone to it; but not much.  Kind of like to bottom of an old oil can,  I suppose that when that happens it makes contact with the steering column shaft providing a ground so the horn ring.

I put 3 little very thin washers between the funny looking thing and the steering wheel plate where the 3 screws go to hold the ring on.  It seems to work fine now.  Suppose this allowed the washer to "oil can" more, so as to provide a good ground.

Yes you need that thin washer to oil can they do get old and lose their action most chevelle resto places sell replacements
Also stretch the spring a bit to get better contact
Assume this the std wheel not the N34 one
