Hello,

Mike Hayen here... I used to be a member of the Chevelle Club until I moved to North Dakota.  I often still lurk the site to see what is going on.

I am done with the State Patrol academy and now patrolling on my own.  I love the job!

I am considering selling the Chevelle.  I have no room for it and am finding out that other less expensive hobbies exist.

For those of you who know my chevelle what would be a reasonable asking price for it. I have A LOT into it and would like to get what I have into it.  However, I know that I probably would not get that much.  I have about 25K into it.

What are your thoughts? I am torn as the car is paid for and the only thing I pay for is the insurance and that is not a lot. However, I don't get a chance to drive it and I don't have a place to store it.  I was thinking of starting a classic car club in the area for all the guys who do have classic cars -- there are a lot of them too!

So, please talk me out of it or give me a good asking price for what I could get out of it.

Thanks, Mike

It's bought & paid for, you'll never find another, the car has "history" with you, storage insurance is cheap, and I'm sure you could find a nice little old lady in your patrol area or neighborhood with a garage stall not being used that would love another $30 a month AND a cop stopping by every once in awhile!!

(Mrs. Grosshauser - still remember her name 30 years later. Nice widowed woman who I rented her garage from in IL. Had useless kids & Sons in law and I'd do some little odd-jobs for her as well. There is NO better protection for your car than a busy-body little old lady with nothing to do than look out the windows!)

Maybe you could start the ND chapter of "Cops & Rodders"??

Good to hear from you Mike.  I agree with John...keep it and find some storage for it.  It seems that most people get about 1/2 of their money back on a modified Chevelle especially if it has a unique paint scheme or other features that make it appeal to a narrower audience.  There are exceptions of course and one or two people might decide they just have to have it.  You could always list it for your price and see what happens. Being as there are many guys flush with cash working the oil boom and spending it isn't an issue for most, you might get lucky!  I still vote keep it but I personally have had the same debate a few times myself.

Mike,

Congratulations on your selection and completion of what I’m sure is a challenging and competitive program. Thank you for having the courage to get up every morning put on a bulletproof vest and spend much of your day helping others and dealing with idiots; North Dakota is a better place because your there.

The car, KEEP IT! You cannot sell it for what it’s worth to you; you could never replace it for what you have in it. John’s right, find a place to store it; preserve it and let it sit.
Change of jobs, change of location or a change of life, we all go through it. Let it sit, maybe even for a couple of years and then if you still want to sell it, rethink it then, but then Mike could be right, you might get lucky in the ND boom. But give life a chance to catch up first.

Whatever you decide, best of luck to you and your family in your new career, and remember boring is ok; stay in touch with the old gang.

Now is a slow time of the year to network, but talking with others who have classic cars may turn up a place to keep it AND see if there is interest in a local club to boot !! Do you have the extra time to run the whole thing ? Since it's your idea, the responsibility may be all yours until others step forward. Derek may have more insight on this for you.

Those of us who have sold cars we can't replace can lament the "regrets" all day long about keeping it, but if you really want to head in a different direction, then pass the car along to a new enthusiast. Losing money when selling cars is a familiar trend for me too, so be prepared to hear a lot of low-ball offers, especially in this economy. Seems the few with cash expect unreasonable bargains, since they may be in the minority of potential buyers.

Good luck with your decision.

Mike,

If you don't need the cash, I would say store the 'Silver mullet' and enjoy using it come summer time. The price to keep it is very minimal now and the car has history...even with the shag carpet seats and that weird front air deflector that were on it...vintage man! Have some fun rides with the kids and build some memories.

The choice is yours.

Thanks for all the advice. I will consider keeping the silver mullet for as long as I can.

Gotta tell ya a story... One of my "jobs" as a Trooper is to do VIN andvehicle inspections. This guy calls me up and wants me to do a VIN inspection. I go to a non-descript pole barn and find inside an awesome man-cave. He has guns (50 cal., antiques, special edition and such), Nascar racing stuff (signed by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and eveyone else). pinball machines, and everything else a guy would be amazed about. I could have spent an hour looking at all the cool stuff he had.

Then I ask him about the VIN inspections --- I walk into the attached garage and find a 1969 Chevelle SS (he bought original and in mint condition with low miles), a 2012 Chev Camaro with 20 miles on it ( he said it hugs the roads are high speeds). I see another typical car sitting there and think that is the one--nope not it. In the corner is a 1970 Buick something-or-other. He wants me to do the VIN inspection on that car. He hands me the paperwork. In the paperwork he gives me I see the purchase agreement for about $115,000.
He stated the Olds is a special car and there are ouly a small amount made. It had a complete frame off resoration with orginal engine and matching numbers. He bought it from a guy out east. Sitting here, right now, I think it was a 1970 but I may be wrong. It was a nice car....I guess $115,000 worth.

WOW . He even had a 350 engine (nicely painted and such) sitting in the corner. I asked him about it and he lifted up the cover and I find out that it actually was a GRILL with header pipes and such.

My father in law has a 1969 Impalla with less than 60K on it (all original). The brother in law has a 1970 Impalla SS also.

I am thinking about starting an "old car club" just to see what the old farmers have hidden in their barns.

I think we would all be surprised to find what’s sitting in some of those barns.

Glad your enjoying your new position. I’m curious what is the highest you’ve clocked someone at out there?

Was it one of those Hurst Special Editions?  A guy in Medford, MN has two of those Hurst cars.

The fastest I've had so far is 103 in a 75 zone(Interstate 94) and a 102 in a 65 zone (Hwy).
