What to look for in a small trailer
Permalink

I'm going to get a small utility trailer for home project use. It will be towed behind my Impala. Minimum cargo space needed is 4' wide by 6 (prefer 8') long so I can haul sheets of plywood, etc. What should I be looking for? I'm new to trailers, though I have driven with them occasionally they've never been mine.

I'm looking to stay under $500 or so, and used is fine. What should I be looking for? I already have the hitch on my car.

Aluminum I would look on Craigstlist under RVs. Make sure the deck is solid

I second Craigslist. You should find something cheap there.

After materials & licensing it'll just break your budget, but Northern Tool sells a trailer kit that is pretty cool.

I built one for us about 10 years ago and it is holding up great. This little unit has paid for itself and earned it's keep. The best part is it folds up!

You pull a few pins, the tongue drops down, and it folds in 1/2. Takes up about 2d x 5w x 5h in space (without the stake bed - which isn't included in the materials or cost - but plans are supplied).

I opted for the larger wheels/tires, also bought a spare at the same time. I also bought a 2" receiver to replace the (supplied) 1-7/8".

You can knock this thing out in a weekend easy.

X2, I was going to suggest one from Northern. If folding isn't important, there is a welded construction trailer like this on clearance at the Northern in Woodbury for about the same price. The license is lifetime for a trailer under 3000# too, so it's a one time expense.

My Dad had the Northern fold-up trailer and it was cool, kept it in the garage so it stayed nice. when he moved to the old folks home we sold it and got 275 bucks! He only paid 375 new and had it for almost 10 years.angry

I went to HF's site and they have a folder too. Here's links to both. Compare and discuss.

I haven't looked at either in person yet, but I know which I'm leaning towards. I would pick it up at the store vs delivery since I wouldn't ahve to rely on the shipper then.

Well, the HF trailer is $90 less but can you pick that one up at the store and avoid the $90 shipping cost ?

Bryan, If you're down around SLP anytime in the afternoons you're more than welcome to come over and take a look at my trailer... you can see what one looks like after 10 years of service and get an idea of if it'll work for you.

If you are going to buy a steel trailer I highly reccommend keeping it stored indoors. If it is going to live outdoors, go aluminum.

Bryan, did you already pull the trigger on this?

Northern Tool has them $50 off right now:

Derek, check out the customer pics that show the RV version.

Yep, that's the one I got. At the Blaine store, it was $399 and then went on sale for another $50 off. Hard to pass it up for that price since it's pretty much exactly what I was looking for.
