Well, here she is! I found this '72 SS (85% sure it's a true SS) Chevelle in Iowa that used to be in Wisconsin until a few months ago.
Details:
402 BBC Turbo 400 12 Bolt Posi/4.11 gears (I think...) All the SS stuff except for boxed lower control arms and a rear sway bar (not sure if it was ordered this way or if someone swapped in a different axle which is most likely) Round gauge dash with gauges (Tach and Amps don't work... yet!) LOTS of options (rear defog, power windows/locks, cruise control) Fresh paint Original floor and trunk pans (looks like all original sheet metal throughout the car) Original AC car and has all the bits/pieces to complete it (not installed)
No documentation provided but I will be looking behind the rear seat, on top of the gas tank, door panels for a build sheet. I have the contact information for the previous owner who had it 10 years, so I'm hoping to learn more from him. When he sold it, he claimed it was originally a SS-350 small block car and the 402 is a period correct engine with 10K miles.
The underside is untouched and looks original. Very solid. Just needs a good cleaning an detailing.
Future plans include possibly a 200R4 overdrive trans which would work great with the deep gears and still get decent mileage. I'll also replace the lower control arms with boxed ones and a rear sway bar.
Otherwise, I'll be going through the motor with a check/tune, some minor bits and pieces to be replaced, and probably a wet sand/buff as there are some small bits of dust in the paint.
I need to black out the headlight trim rings in true SS fashion (not sure why they aren't) and replace the 2 missing chrome strips on the top/bottom of the front grill.
The car was at a collector car dealer in Iowa, and he plans on delivering it Thursday night. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats Stan. I knew that you were looking at a few while traveling. The timing is ironic because I was just checking out another 72 an hour ago and took pictures and everything for you. I had seen it earlier in the year along the side of the road for sale and on a whim drove by today. The car wasn't outside but the garage door was open and the owner was out mowing. If anyone else knows someone in the market for a Chevelle let me know and I can pass on the info. It was a nice car too.

Michael, there was a guy that wanted to buy mine but was just short of the price and now has his money together and could have bought it.... So, if you want to provide the info on the one you found I will forward it on to him. He's looking in the $12-15K range. Let me know.

Thanks Michael. Sorry to leave you and the other 'green' guys in the dust!
Some day when my Chevelle gets real paint it will be dark blue and then I'll be joining you in the blue club. Of course that will be some time from now and you'll probaly have had a few more Chevelle's by then so who knows.
Holy crap, I miss a few months because I'm busy with work and Stan swaps cars AGAIN !!!! Beautiful car but you're gonna miss the 454/4 speed...
Good to hear from you Mitch! I just thought about you the other day and wondered if you'd completely gone to the darkside of the camaro club...
Hope to see you at one of the upcoming meetings.
Yeah, the 4 speed manual was fun, but I think I'm going to enjoy the 4 speed auto even more especially with having 4.11 gears and an overdrive on the highway!
