How do I determine if my PS Pump or Gear Box went Bad?

While driving Saturday night the PS just quit.cry  Is there any way to determine if its the pump or the gear box? 

Have heard that the pump check valve might be the problem.  Just about to pull it out of the pump.  Anyway to determine if the valve is bad?  Anyone ever replace one of these?  Are they included in the Pump rebuild kit? This is the original  66 BB remote reservoir pump and original gearbox.

Just rebuilt the gear box the winter before last. What would be the likely culprit here? Has worked fine until Saturday night.   Thanks.
