The Good Stuff...

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for saving the environment, and responsible "release" of chemicals/whatever into said... but

What happened to the "Good":
Carb Cleaner
Brake Cleaner
Parts Washer Solvent

that kind of stuff??

I was detailing/cleaning the wheels on the '65 tonight. In the nooks & crannies was an amalgum of brake dust, road grime, tar, crud, and whatever else you can pick up on the road. I tried all of the above, and none of them would do a thing. Not even soften it up and smear it around! Zip/Zero/Nada.

I go digging around in the shop cabinet, and come across an old aerosol can of Simoniz "Bug & Tar" remover. (By "old", I mean the can had 1980 printed on it!) I must have gotten it when I cleaned out my dad's stuff after he died.

One spritz of this stuff on the crud and it dissolved and wiped away!

(Granted, I'll probably go cross-eyed and grow a 3rd teste in a week, but wow! This stuff works!)

Look for stuff that does NOT say "Low VOC" (Volatile Organic Compounds) At work here, we use 3M High Power Brake Cleaner stock # 08880, which we buy in cans (by the pallet) since the techs swear by it. At Friendly and Main, they used stuff in bulk which was made by Zecol, came in 55 gal drums. I use BraKleen from NAPA which is OK. Parts washer solvent is one I don't do much of at all, Stoddard (spelling?) solvent is the stuff to use. Never had a problem with whichever can of carb cleaner I pick up, currently I have stuff in a yellow can.
