I bought some replacement seat belts because my car didn't have any installed when I bought it. The originals came with the car but are in pretty bad shape.

The guy I bought it from put new carpet in and didn't cut any holes for the seat belts so I can't tell where the mouting points are. I hate to just start hacking on the carpet. Can someone help with a location? I have a bench seat so maybe reference the seat mounting bolt.

By the way I was at a car show in Redwing yesterday. Seen a very nice white 1970 396 SS. Does that belong to anyone in the group?

Down & dirty/Quick & Easy...

Get some long finishing nails & your jack. (Using all safety precautions...) Jack up one side of the car, crawl under and you'll see the threaded lugs sticking into the driveshaft tunnel. Poke a finishing nail through the hole into the car - find it on the inside.

For the outboard belts, removing the sill plate is the easiest way to find the holes.

Use a very sharp blade and cut a small X instead of just drilling into the carpet too. Drilling can make you catch a thread and rip into the carpet.

Rather than jacking up the car, IMO opinion it's easier to remove the bench seat (4 bolts) and pull the carpet up to find the hole locations.  Then you can install the bolts, lay the carpet back down, and then cut an X where the bolt is when you press down on the carpet.

I saw a yellow and black stripe '72 Chevelle at Hastings last night and I thought it might be you, but probably not since you were at Redwing.

Finaly had time to take Stan's advice and pulled the bench seat. Now I really feel dumb. There are two holed near the drive shaft hump. Right size holes for the belt bolt but no weld nut on the pan. No big deal. So I start to look for the outward holes. Not there! The inboard holes are about an inch forward of the seat bolts. Can someone tell me how far from the inboard hole the outward hole should be?
