A friend has a 2014 Chevy Equinox

2.4L 4-popper, AWD

Been running synthetic since new. Oil changes by owner's boyfriend/my friend (his Dad).

Just did another change, 6000 miles since last. Noticed that only 2-1/2 quarts came out of it! Sump/capacity is 5qts. Engine uses a vertical "element" type filter, so only ounces would be lost. There's no detectable leaks, drips, and no oil film/fog in the engine bay.

Owner isn't a "car gal", so diagnostics such as blue smoke, engine temp, etc. aren't available - she just drives it and lets the boyfriend handle the "it's brokens".

Anyone have any history with this engine? Ideas, input...

JD goggle Equinox 2.4L oil consumption.
Lots to read, high oil consumption due to poor design, recalls, class action lawsuits. Note some examples below.

Design defects in GM's 2.4L Ecotec engine allow excess oil to sneak into the combustion chamber. The oil is burned off, meaning owners need to top off their oil between changes or risk permanent engine damage.

Chevrolet Equinox SUVs burn through motor oil at an alarming rate causing engine damage and other serious issues, according to a class action lawsuit filed by two vehicle owners.

Why does my Chevy Equinox use so much oil?
What causes the alleged oil consumption problem? The root cause of the apparent oil consumption issue in Equinox and Terrain vehicles is a defectively designed piston and piston ring assembly, according to the complaint.Jan 10, 20

Although GM has not issued any official recall for excessive oil consumption issues in either vehicle, the automaker has issued extended coverage to owners and lessees of certain Equinox and Terrain vehicles. The special coverage offers coverage for engine problems resulting from excessive piston ring wear.Oct 13, 20

Now update the shop build.
