396 Big Block Stock

I guys my dad has a 396 Big Block that we are thinking about selling. It is pretty stock motor. It has a carb and intake and runs great. Does anyone know what a good value would be on this.  We pulled it out of our 68 chevelle.

Ben,

If you could post some numbers, any numbers cast into or stamped on the block, heads and intake manifold. There is some 396 knowledge here, the numbers would really help when trying to figure or estimate a value.

Yup, it would help to get some numbers for sure. I had a bunch of info typed here but deleted it before submitting this post. Too many variables to determine value before hand until we can help you figure out what you have. Ive been keeping my eye out for a reasonably priced big block to swap out the 396 I already have, it runs fine but needs some help inside.

I know good 454's typically sell for around 650-1500 depending how well they run and how complete they are and if accessories come with or not. The typical common 396's that came in a lot of base SS cars, pickups, full size dont seem to sell as well because you get more cubes to build on with a 454. Something I learned over the years having a 396 that isnt anything special either, 2 bolt main, Impala casting, cast iron intake with q jet, etc.

If you come up with a value and figure out a fair price, keep me in mind, I may be interested.

Unless it's something special, I'd say $700-1000 for a good runner.

Casting numbers and dates may help, but unless it was originally a solid-lifter rectangle port (L78) there's not much demand for small-cube big-blocks.

Mainly of interest to a guy who wants an casting # and casting date correct engine.

 

As indicated, what is casting # of block and heads.  Does it have a steel or iron crank.  What are the rods?  What about the intake, what is it?  What carb?

 

You say stock?  Stock what, 325, 350, or 375?

 

Add the information or PM it to me.
