Another schoolbus crash

This one happened on the highway by my brother's house (where I grew up) just yesterday.

The crash in front of my house in September was caused by texting. This one was caused by a lack of car-control skills. The car and bus were going opposite directions. There was an icy spot on the road, and the driver of the car lost control and skidded backward into the bus's path, killing the driver and injuring the passenger. The driver of the bus is my cousin... I'm sure he'll have a tough time with this on his mind for a long time.

For those of you with young drivers, please consider equipping them with something even more important than seatbelts and airbags. Get them some car-control training to avoid the crash altogether... Minnesota Autosports Club has a "RoadSkills Teen Car Control Clinic" every year. It is a non-competition based defensive driving and skid-recovery training course aimed specifically at young drivers and conducted in their own cars. This year it is on June 8th at DCTC in Rosemount.

That's awful, hopefully the passenger pulls through.  I'm sure it will be hard for your cousin, but nothing he could do with a bus when a car comes sliding in front of him.

No kidding. The driver training our kids receive is a JOKE... they just perpetuate the "Two Hole Method" of driving - key in this hole, gas in this hole.

I took both of my kids multiple times to empty parking lots after a snowfall, alternating in a FWD or RWD car, and had them fling it around, "lose it", recover, controlled slides/powerskids, etc. (the stuff we call "having fun"). All with a purpose - to teach them and have them get a "feel" for when things go wrong, and how to drive out of it.

(It works. Both my kids have commented to me about being in situations where "driving through" a situation has saved their bacon, as opposed to letting Jesus take the wheel.)
