'67 El Camino question . . .

I just finished reading the February issue of the NCC newsletter --- nice job, Bryan.

In 1967, my brother purchased a new El Camino with a 396 c.i. engine. The newsletter article referred to the SS model being available with a 396 in 1966. I assume the SS model carried forward to 1967. What's unusual is that my brother's EC had no SS badging. It did have the 396 Turbo-Jet badges with the crossed flags on the front fenders. Could the 396 be purchased separately from the SS package? (If so, then I guess his EC was NOT unsual.)

He had a close-ratio Muncie. The tires were 7.75 x 14. He had those burned off in a matter of weeks. I don't know what tires were on a '67 SS Chevelle/El Camino but when I got my '68 SS396 Chevelle the next year, the tires were F70-14 (Firestone WideOval).

Bigblocks were available in 66-67 El Caminos, but the SS package didn't become available in an El Camino until '68.

Karl Drotning's blue '66 El Camino is an original 396 car.

Thanks Derek --- that explains it. My brother's El Camino was Marina Blue -- maybe the same shade as Karl's.
