I would like to buy a set of cheap/rebuildable Vortec heads for a project engine.  Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

M yards would sell the whole engine for maybe 2-300 (The replacement engine core is only $100 last I saw). They're already 10+ years old. You're looking for 96-99 truck 5.7 (8th digit of te VIN is R), or 96-00 in suburban/tahoe. Some cube trucks/delivery van chassis vehicles had those engines for another couple years. The 3/4 ton or 1 tons also had 4 bolt blocks, fyi.

Try using http://car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi and see what comes up near you. I searched cylinder head and found several listings.

Hi Bowtie, Thanks for the info.  I did find a pair of heads for $150.00-($75 each) at local yard.  I am looking to buy a whole engine for around $200 or a complete pair for around a 100 bucks if I can.  Some one has got to have a pair sitting in their garage taking up space... just need to make the connection.. As said, I am willing to pay $100.00 cash and will pick them up.   Trying to keep initial cost down and put money towards reconditioning the heads and maybe some upgrades on them.

Hi Stan,  I called "this guy" last night and he said that he had sold the pair of heads,  I also called on a cL ad for Shakopee for a seized up longblock but that was sold as well... You would think these characters would delete their ads after the items have sold??  I guess they don't mind answering the extra phone calls...  Easy to post ads-but hard to remove them when the items are sold?!

Thanks Stan for sharing anyway...

Sorry about that Tim.  My pet peeve too on people not taking down ads after they sell.  angry

I'll add this to my CL watch list, and will let you know.  Sounds like you are already watching though.

I wonder if Viking Salvage south of Farmington might have some?

Yeah Stan,  They should... I have located a set for $150.00 $75/per head at Salvage yard closest to me.  Am just out fishing I guess to see if I could find a budget 2cents friendly pair for around a $100.00, $50.00/per  for a cheap quick 327 carbed project build.  I bought  a 39,000 mile- steel crank 327 long block/$500 out of a 66 chev fire truck that has the small valved heads.  I picked up an alum dual plane GM vortec carb intake from a zz crate motor for $150.00 a while back so thought I would put this engine together this coming month if I could find some heads.
