I was wondering if anyone that knows there carbs, can give me alittle guidance. My dad has a 540 big block and he cant stand the dominator carb on the motor right now so he wants to get rid of it. He's looking at a Carburetor, Model 4150 HP, 950 cfm, Square Bore, 4-Barrel, Dual Inlet, . Can anyone give me advice on this. Looking to get him this maybe for xmas. Thanks so much. Looking for something for the street.
You need to decide if you want vacuum advance (typical with an auto trans)or a double-pumper (typical with a manual trans). Also, not sure if electric choke is an option on this big of carb but you may want it cause it can be cold in March when we start itching.
He menitoned 4150 HP which is a chokeless no horn High Performance square bore carb double pumper dual feed. If he is going from a 4500 to 4150 HP he will need an adaptor plate. The 4150 HP is more street friendly and better on gas then the Dominator. 4150 has better mid range responce. The 4500 will make more power and have better take off and top end shines running all out. At the strip the Dominator is usually 2-3 tenths faster in with bbc setups. Menitoned on your other post if looking new call Prosystems as they will custom build for your application for about the same price as a new Holley. Given you have a 540 which is not your typical high performance 396-496bbc build there are deltas to consider which are not covered all that well by an off the shelf Holley as a new Holley off shelf HP. My lesson learned with my experiences with my Holley 1000HP which sits in a box for another project. Prosystems may offer to build your current carb for your app saving you $$ on carb and adaptor. They may reccomend a 4150 for your application too. If you have engine build dyno that will help them dial it in. They are great as they will help you with any issue at all you have with their carb.
You also need to consider what you have for a fuel setup presently and if you are truly having carb issues. 540 is big and likes big fuel lines and large volumes of gas. Got to remember your car is now 150 to 100 ci bigger then ever designed and probaly close to double the HP of a 68 SS 396.
just went through my 4150. if its for a street car, for sure use a vacuum secondary. just a hint, the carb will need to be tuned for youre app. you know power valve, jets, secondary springs. the carb should come with a tuning cd watch it several times then if you can, watch it in the shop while youre tuning for referance. oh one more thing, obviousley youll need a vacuum gauge but i would also recommend installing an air fuel gauge to verify youre tune.....just a thought but, what do i know
