Fiberglass Hoods
Permalink

One of my winter projects is getting (and installing if time allows) a new fiberglass hood.  I currently have a glass hood on the car, but it suffers from a bow and a few cracks.

Looking online I have found hoods from Harwood (through Summit), GlassTek, and up22.com. All are about the same $, but holding my breath on freight.

I was going to go with a 4 1/2" cowl in the bolt on version.

Any advice on whom to go with or another company to go with?

I would like to buy something and have it fit decent out of the box.

Thanks

Ive heard good things about http://www.usbody.com/ in the past.. Understand that a true race hood wont last on hinges they are a pin on only... US body source makes heavy duty versions that will work hinged but with lightweight springs only.

Saw a glass hood that used gas struts that would take a little bit of work but would be worth it.

Steve M had a harwood on his 69 chevelle. It was the nicer finished underside one and it seemed to fit pretty good. I think there was a little trimming where the cowl on the hood overhung the cowl of the windshield but it was nothing major.

They all range within a hundred $$ of each other so I'm looking for good fit and finish so painting is not required for the 1st year. Black car and black hood. Harwood seems to be the most popular.

You will want to spray some kind of paint on it to protect it from UV light.

I have always wondered that because I see cars with the black hoods and whatever the regular body color is (red, yellow, green) at shows or online.  Harwood recommends you don't paint it right away and drive the car with the unpainted hood as to allow the fiberglass to cure from engine heat/ the sun.  I am not sure about prolonged use that way though, I may contact them.
