I think it was asked a while back, but who here has served in the military, or has close family that is currently serving?

I'll start.

I have not, though I seriously considered it when graduating in 1991. My father had applied to the US Military Academy at West Point in 1963. He was told that the quota was filled already but was asked by, and nominated to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1964 by state Congressman Don Fraser. He was an alternate, and in addition to that he was also given a consideration to the Merchant Marine Academy. He went for preliminary testing, though was denied due to a cyst found during his physical exam. I have an uncle who served as a Marine in Vietnam and 3 gradfathers who all served in WWII. My dad's dad served under Patton.

a scary thought. my dad served world war II. twice recieved silver star for bravery and got a purple heart. always told the story of patten, he was wounded at that time. there was a guy or few armed standing behind a curtain and as he told it if patton would have touched a soldier during his famous hospital visit he would have died. from there he ended in a pow camp for 18 months lost most his body mass and all his teath. was liberated by the Russians who then opened fire upon them. told the story of crawling through a potatoes field after liberation for days finding two potatoes and was very happy.  he never talked about this till he was dying. iwas in military during middle 70's peace and drug time.

Dad had a trade and kids during WWII.. stuck him in the shipyards in San diego.. uncle was a sea bee. went all through the Pacific and helped sting wire at the airfield on Tinian.... Had a couple of older guys in the neighborhood who went through Europe and the battle of the bulge...Only heard them talk about it once and it was short. ..too the point.. and it wasnt pretty..

Not much military service in my family. Had an uncle killed in Vietnam, January '68. He was there less than a month...

I never served in the military myself, but as most of you know my son, serving in the National Guard was just called active an is preparing to deploy to Kuwait.

I had a great uncle that served in Army and received a star or medal, for rescuing some fellow soldiers from a burning helicopter and the fumes messed him up, because he was never the same after that.  I also had a great aunt that we found out after she passed was a spy in Germany for the US, during and around WWII.  My grandfather served in WWII, as an ambulance driver, and never spoke much of his time in the service, which I can understand.

Dad did little over 2 tours in Vietnam he was ready to leave end of Jan '68 but the Tet offensive started up and he had to stay a little longer. Army Huey Door gunner in Da Nang. Crashed 3x and survived. One time they were flying to low and took on some fire in a BN Huey with a load of ARVIN and they had to ditch in the Ocean outside Da Nang only the crew survived. He typically does not talk about it to much but he took lots of pictures and when I was little I asked a lot of questions. Uncle was in Army during the Vietnam war but never went there. My grand father served in WWII he was a airplane mechanic. My great Grandfather was in WWI. Seems like everyone on my Dad's side of the family was inthe military. My mother's side nobody was in the military. My wife's grandfather was a paratrooper in WWII and he was killed in France during D-Day invation he never knew he had a son on the way. My dad made it very clear he never wanted me to go into the military, pushed me to stay in school.

All the guys in my family served. I was in the AF from 84-88 turning wrenches on C-141s mostly. Also some C-5s and C-130s. Dad was Navy, grandfathers were both Army. My uncle left for Viet Nam on the day I was born (Nov 13, 66)- he was a Major in the Green Berets and did several tours, earning multiple purple hearts during combat. The military has always been a part of my family, although no one I'm aware of ever made a career out of it. The majority of us did 4 and got out like I did, and some (like my uncle) did around 10 yrs. My ancestors were in every big war this country has had, from the Revolution to the Civil War etc. It's crazy to think about that, but serving is almost a rite of passage in my family. It's not a matter of if you'll serve, but rather which branch and for how long.

Drafted in 68, 2 brothers served in the navy in the late 60's early 70's. Dad spent 3 yrs in the Pacific. Strong opinions about the Japaneses. Son in-law is currently a F-35 pilot in the air force.

What did you guys think about the segment on 60 min last Sunday. If the boys in power in the government and the CIA hadn't been padding their pocket and careers, looks like 9-11 could have been avoided and the taxpayers could have saved a lot of money. Also George W. II and **** C. and the CIA wouldn't have thought that Saddam had WMD and was harboring the terrorists. Would have been a whole different last 10 years.

Whats all this about editing out certain words.  Some people have a name that starts with D and ends with K.
