Back from the race

Went down to Iowa Speedway this past weekend for some good old Chump Car racing. It was a 24 hour race. Started at 10:00 am Saturday and ended 11:00 am Sunday (with a one hour break at 6:00pm) It was tough trying to stay awake, but the most fun I have ever had. We ended up 12th out of 30 cars. Our goal was to finish and place in the top half. Both of which we did. While we raced a F*rd (#80 Mustang), I included some pics of Chevy race cars as well. My two favorites, the Chevette and a Caprice wagon. Why anyone would try this with a 700R4 is beyond me. The wagon's tranny gave up the ghost after only 6 laps. The Chevette billowed smoke with only about 10 laps left but managed to finish.

What kind of speeds do you run over 24 hours? What do you do for lunch?

Yes, repairs are allowed during the race. Teams have been known to change engines trannys etc. We took a different engine trans and rear diff. One team at Brainard last year changed their entire car. They cut the roll cage out and welded it in another. We might be doing the race at Brainard on July 16 and may need a driver or two if anyone is interested. You'll have the time of your life.

We had a small electric frying pan in the pits we cooked some eggs and sausage in but none of us did much eating.

Where's your goofy "theme" paint job?

I know the "Team Shortbus" and "Party-Cat" guys pretty well.

I've been offered buy-ins on those teams, but what keeps me from doing it is the cost of entry, consumables, and equipment rental, with no guarantee that the car will last long enough to get to even drive it.

There's no doubt that auto racing is expensive. We used exactly 100 gallons of gas for the Iowa race. That didn't include the gas for the tow rig down and back. I think I spent about $400 to $500 this past weekend, but it was worth every penny.

As for the 24hrs of Lemons. Lemons is more circus where Chump is more racing. No "peoples curse" in Chump car and they also don't make you drive around with stupid stuff welded to your car. Everyone on our team unanimously voted that we'ed never run a Lemons race.
