Dist issue is solved. So why when trying to start and time the engine such a headache So pulled the air cleaner and base and got the car to run fairly well, so put back the air cleaner and base. So when running the accelerator up to check total timing the engine would kill. Thinking a gas problem. Take the air cleaner and base off all things seemed fine. According to SS 396 an exact reproduction. Carb rebuilt And car ran fine last fall with a different ac base.
It seems that the vent rod is hitting the air clearner base just enough so the vent on the front fuel bowl won’t close. So much for exact repo. I think I should try my holly ac base from my other car. I am thinking I can just bend the rod So it doesn’t hit the base.

I would dent the base before messing up the carb rod.

I agree with this. How much room do you need? A well placed dent would be a better solution IMHO.

Well I should know by this afternoon. I went to the garage this morning before I saw these messages. So I bent the rod. The vent opens and closes as it should; but I have yet to try the car. I have to go and get some gas this morning. By the way Eric Jackson who rebuilt the carb also suggest the hanger and base or some kind of spacer to raise the air cleaner base.
