I've got a 97 (I think) Yamaha Big Bear 350 4 wheeler. If you pull start it, there's spark. If you push the starter button, the starter spins the motor, but no spark/start. It'll start easy enough pull starting it, until it's on the compression stroke, and yanks the rope right out of your hands and words come a flying . Not going to have that come winter time and the driveway needs to be plowed. Attached is the wiring diagram. If anyone wants to have some fun with wiring trouble shooting, I'd greatly appreciate it. #29 is the start switch, R/W leading out of it - for sure have power to #13 - oil temp light, lights up when pushing button. Would assume I have power to #6 - starter relay - since the starter engages. I'm thinking I need to check for power at Y/B coming out of #8 starting circuit cut off relay, and that Y/B leads into the CDI box. That's about the only thing I can tell for wiring. Some forums have said it could be the CDI box itself. The problem has progressively gotten worse. Use to be once in a while, but now it's all the time. Thinking I need to check all the connections and make sure they're good and clean. Otherwise, would there be a way to "trick" the cdi by bypassing wiring or something so that it thinks it's being pull started?
Check the resistance of both the source coil and the pick up coil. You are using all the systems power to spin over the ATV and there is nothing left to give you spark. Test this theory by spinning it over and pulling the rope at the same time. My guess is it will fire immediately. That’s the ice fisherman’s trick.
We used to grind the pick up coil holes larger to get a tighter air gap. Your case will probably be old coil. Any further questions?Give me a call.
